It’s October and that means one thing…retro horror games! and what better than a 4K capture of Beast Busters: Second Nightmare on the Hyper Neo Geo 64! It one of the rarest retro games on the successor to the Neo Geo AES / Neo Geo MVS and its a piece of arcade history! Horror gaming was never so…horror filled!
Lately I have been getting TONS of questions on the Hyper Neo Geo 64 hardware! Should I buy one? What are the best games? Is the arcade hardware worth it? Well…that’s not an easy retro gaming related question to answer! So I thought…let’s revisit a video I did four years ago with Hyper Neo Geo 64 in 4K! Retrogaming test incoming! Sadly this was never a retro game console as the home console variant of the Hyper Neo Geo 64 was cancelled!

The Hyper Neo Geo 64 has seven total games; Fatal Fury Wild Ambition, Samurai Shodown 64 (also known as Samurai Spirits), Samurai Shodown 64: Warriors Rage (also known as Samurai Spirits 64 2), Buriki One, Beast Busters: Second Nightmare, Round Trip RV and Offbeat Racer. So we get arcade fighting games from SNK, arcade racing games from SNK and one arcade lightgun game from SNK! But…how well does each game work under MAME emulation? Let’s find out with MAME .252 unstable build! Emulators for the win!
Plus all seven of these games qualify for both obscure video game and rare video game status…so MAME running them at all is a great win for video game preservation!

Something that always strikes me about this game is how good the lighting/shading/texture art is, I love the days when artists had to hand paint so much shading into the textures.
Looks absolutely great! The gameplay is fantastic!
Ooh this would have had a huge age rating on the marquee over here. At least at amusement parks… I doubt gas stations or malls would have cared.
so happy to see you love this game as much as I do. I used to play this all the time in the early 2000's in my local bowling alley, totally blew me away. on another level compared to stuff like HotD, and for the longest time I was the only person it seemed like that new this game even existed. I thought someday it would get ported, oh how naive I was.this game deserves to be remembered, it truly is incredible.
Wait, are this running on a MAME emulator? If it is, they finally fix the issue with the game.
Oh, should see the video until the end. You're actually playing on actual hardware. XD
Why are they all zombie?
Please do dragon gun
Are this Mame version ? how is works in Mame now ?
This game just oozes style, it's a crime that it never got ported and will eventually be lost to time, because even boards will fail. It's like the beast busters series is cursed, everything SNK did with the IP just never took off. It should be a cult classic like HOTD, but nobody remembers it. Thanks for the high quality footage.
I always get Beast Busters and Zombie Raid confused. Never knew a 3D sequel existed.
Grahpics lok low res, but the hud looks high res
Every time I try to play this at Galloping Ghost the guns are STILL busted. I would pay THEM to have it repaired lol.
I love NeoGeo
Can't use lightguns on an OLED though.
Had it running decent in MAME a while ago. Sound was bad but I played it. I just wish I finished it. Maybe I'll give it another go soon
I'm gonna bust'a move on Beast Busters! 😎
Great use of color in this game.
Saw it one time in the arcade as a kid and even then I thought “someone played house of the dead but felt it was too tame for them.”
Pretty cool rail shooter!
1:43 the way this little scene was directed is so cool
This chi-town brother is the light gun master of games
I remember seeing this game in arcades and wondering what they ran for hardware, so thanks for first reminding me of this game, and second, explaining the hardware.
The L7a1045 L6025 DSP-A sound chip on the Hyper Neo Geo is a chip sequencer version of the Akai MPC 3000 (1994) and was used by a lot of professionals including Dr DRE and Puff daddy along with many electronica artists, MPC's were invented by the Roger Linn same guy that Made the Linn drums and LM-1. Speaking of the Linn drum it's still a viable machine i just used it for one of the layers of drums for the cover me and guitarist Jose Moreno made for NightStriker Urban Trail
This game is straight up my alley. Love lightgun shooters like this. I am curious, have you played or owned the arcade board for Vampire Night from namco and Sega?
I love the comic book look of this and HotD1 and Thief, where harsh blacks and vivid primaries are painted on the textures directly, in a time when 3D lighting was unrefined. Cel shading is an awesome look but Beast Busters in particular has a mood that I've not seen anywhere since.
It's sad we won't get a modern day remake of this game.
It's weird to see that the next game in the Beast Busters series would be a top down (?) game on Neo Geo Pocket (first beast busters I was introduced to). Complete change in gameplay.
Never seen this before in an arcade, but I've seen you cover this before. It looks awesome. My favorites are evil night and carnevil and zombie raid and hotd 1 and 2.
Huh, I always thought the graphics of the Hyper 64 were a slight upgrade on the N64, but like with Namco and the PS1. But this looks comparable to the M2?
I bought a slightly disheveled BBSN off a local operator for 20 bucks in 2010, had a post-it note on the marquee that said to be dismantled. Fixed it up got it going and still have it.
Oooh La La. Now you have a game that I know I'm going to enjoy from my favorite game company VGE. Thank you for sharing this . This will be a real treat for sure. 8^)
Anthony…
Gaming bliss.
Does anyone know if they've fixed the audio for this in newer versions of MAME?
I dig the level design, very different than Sega's post apocalyptic style, this one looks like the zombie invasion just recently happened
FACTS!
The arcade I worked at had this and maybe one morning I turned it on Free Play when it wasn't busy and enjoyed the hell out of it!
Glad to know someone feels the same way I do about the game!
