SNK’s Rarest Arcade Game and a Straight Up Horror Gaming Masterpiece

It’s October and that means one thing…retro horror games! and what better than a 4K capture of Beast Busters: Second Nightmare on the Hyper Neo Geo 64! It one of the rarest retro games on the successor to the Neo Geo AES / Neo Geo MVS and its a piece of arcade history! Horror gaming was never so…horror filled!

Lately I have been getting TONS of questions on the Hyper Neo Geo 64 hardware! Should I buy one? What are the best games? Is the arcade hardware worth it? Well…that’s not an easy retro gaming related question to answer! So I thought…let’s revisit a video I did four years ago with Hyper Neo Geo 64 in 4K! Retrogaming test incoming! Sadly this was never a retro game console as the home console variant of the Hyper Neo Geo 64 was cancelled!

Patreon Thanks : Seth Peterson, Tim Hugall, John Thompson, Paul Daniel, Porch, Jon Anderson,

Mike Puelinckx, Shad Uttam, Dan L and James Mann!

The Hyper Neo Geo 64 has seven total games; Fatal Fury Wild Ambition, Samurai Shodown 64 (also known as Samurai Spirits), Samurai Shodown 64: Warriors Rage (also known as Samurai Spirits 64 2), Buriki One, Beast Busters: Second Nightmare, Round Trip RV and Offbeat Racer. So we get arcade fighting games from SNK, arcade racing games from SNK and one arcade lightgun game from SNK! But…how well does each game work under MAME emulation? Let’s find out with MAME .252 unstable build! Emulators for the win!

Plus all seven of these games qualify for both obscure video game and rare video game status…so MAME running them at all is a great win for video game preservation!

  1. so happy to see you love this game as much as I do. I used to play this all the time in the early 2000's in my local bowling alley, totally blew me away. on another level compared to stuff like HotD, and for the longest time I was the only person it seemed like that new this game even existed. I thought someday it would get ported, oh how naive I was.this game deserves to be remembered, it truly is incredible.

  2. This game just oozes style, it's a crime that it never got ported and will eventually be lost to time, because even boards will fail. It's like the beast busters series is cursed, everything SNK did with the IP just never took off. It should be a cult classic like HOTD, but nobody remembers it. Thanks for the high quality footage.

  3. The L7a1045 L6025 DSP-A sound chip on the Hyper Neo Geo is a chip sequencer version of the Akai MPC 3000 (1994) and was used by a lot of professionals including Dr DRE and Puff daddy along with many electronica artists, MPC's were invented by the Roger Linn same guy that Made the Linn drums and LM-1. Speaking of the Linn drum it's still a viable machine i just used it for one of the layers of drums for the cover me and guitarist Jose Moreno made for NightStriker Urban Trail

  4. I love the comic book look of this and HotD1 and Thief, where harsh blacks and vivid primaries are painted on the textures directly, in a time when 3D lighting was unrefined. Cel shading is an awesome look but Beast Busters in particular has a mood that I've not seen anywhere since.

  5. It's weird to see that the next game in the Beast Busters series would be a top down (?) game on Neo Geo Pocket (first beast busters I was introduced to). Complete change in gameplay.

  6. FACTS!

The arcade I worked at had this and maybe one morning I turned it on Free Play when it wasn't busy and enjoyed the hell out of it!

Glad to know someone feels the same way I do about the game!
