Everything Jesus does or says is done or said to help people. In the Old Testament Israel came to know their God as the protector of the least, the weakest, foreigners, orphans, and widows. If Jesus is doing these same things, it means that God is in him and that he is in God.
How can Jesus and his Father live in us? They live in us if we do what Jesus and his Father did. It is not difficult to see if God lives in somebody.
In the history of the Church there would always be new situations and problems.
Jesus assures his disciples that they will find the answers to their questions if they listen to his word and keep their hearts open to the work of the Spirit.
The second task of the Spirit is to “remind.” Many of Jesus’ words have been forgotten. For instance, up to a few years ago, many Christians distinguished between just wars and unjust wars and even spoke of “holy wars,” approving the use of arms to defend people’s rights and even approving the death sentence for criminals. Now few people hold these opinions, thank God, but why do we forget that he forbade any form of violence? Here then is the Spirit “reminding” us of the words of Jesus, “Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you…. To the person who strikes you on one cheek….” (Lk 6:27-29). For centuries Christians closed their ears to the call of the Spirit, but now those who try to justify violence are reminded by the words of the Spirit of Jesus. When will we have the courage to open our ears and hearts to the call of the gospel for the fair sharing of goods and for equal rights for men and women?
When Jesus spoke of peace the Roman empire was at peace and all people were under its power. This is the peace that the world gives: a false peace, a peace founded on tyranny, on violence and on injustice. There is certainly no real peace wherever society supports structures that perpetuate the power of the rich over the poor, of the clever and more gifted over the less educated.
INTERCESSORY PRAYER
Jesus Divine Master, You promised to leave us with Your Holy Spirit, to direct, guide and remind us about what You taught. May we be docile so that He may live in us, and we in turn do what You and the Father would do. Amen
