Singapore to start technical studies into "Long Island" off East Coast

Environmental and engineering studies will soon be conducted on Singapore’s east coast. They will look into whether land reclamation is feasible and the impact on nature. It is the first step to realising the vision of Long Island — a project that will see three land tracts add some 800 hectares of land — about twice the size of Marina Bay today — to the current coastline. It is part of Singapore’s long-term plans to guard against rising sea levels and create land for future needs. Rebecca Metteo reports.

May I suggest that before spending LOADS into the project THINK about the housing bubble and dissatisfaction NOW and for the future SO THAT we DO NOT have to go into the future and get BITTEN back by the cost incurred TODAY! THANKS. MIC DROP. Please housing people in the government DO THE A JOB. Don’t do the SUB-PAR B- job.

  4. Hahaha……want to hear citizens, nature reserve, business view about it. Start of video let the cat out of the bag, so we already know the answer. Same happen before the drone laws implementation, many was asked, many attended the meeting, business was interview, in the end many good suggestions were provided but fell on deaf ears. Fortunately, I was not part of the many frustrated folks.

  17. This is one of the national projects with long-term implications and consequences in adapting to SLR. While the Long Island is a reasonable concept to start, a five-year study would not provide an answer or even a near-answer. The project is unlikely to take its final form as there will be new factors, materials, technology, finance, ideas, aspirations, etc, to consider in the generations to come. Take the example of the present popular nature-based solutions (NbS) which, in fact, have a short life-span (IPCC 2022) and will have to be augmented by hard measures to be effective in future (USACE & NOAA SAGE). Attention should be given to predictable impacts and measures or warnings to be given in advance and to consider them within the project. By the mid-2020s the 18.6 lunar nodal cycle will produce higher than normal high tides (Peng et al. 2019). In February 1974 the peak astronomical tide (PAT), occurring once in a century, gave the highest recorded tide at 3.9 m and the local authorities were caught totally unaware (ST 10.2.74). The PAT in this century is due in 2036 (Ray & Cartwright 2007). With rising sea level this can be higher than the one in 1974. Therefore, warning should be given in advance to vulnerable areas, e.g. corporate holiday bungalows at Pasir Ris Park, residences at Sentosa, East Coast Road, Mountbatten Road, Chinatown, etc.

  26. The reclamation project will take decades to complete and the construction of which will close off the area and sea view for decades as well. East Coast is well known for its extensive beach activities for Singaporeans and it will be unimaginable the disruption of lives the decades of construction may cause. If the main benefit of the proposed long island is to face off against rising sea level, will installing tidal gates be a better option? these tidal gates are tried and tested method in Marina Bay Reservoir.
