Well, Seymour, you are an odd fellow, but I must say you steam a good ham.

  1. I vastly, vastly underestimated how many episodes Superintendent Chalmers was in, going into this project. He's ending up getting the longest Simpsons Histories vid (so far) because he played a key role in so many random Simpsons episodes. Ended up leaving a bunch of stuff on the cutting room floor to keep this thing from going 35-40 minutes long 🤣
(Also this ends our run of Simpsons Histories vids. Probably an Extra Seconds next.)

  2. As a Jewish person myself, maybe I can answer about Chalmers relationship to Judaism.

Gary himself may not be Jewish. However his wife Rosemary may have been (even though Rosemary is not a Jewish first name). Being a Jew is passed through the mother, which would make Shauna Jewish herself (regardless of what she actually believes), and Gary is just being a good dad by honoring her heritage by giving her a Bat Mitzvah (and also honoring his late wife). He could be raising Shauna in an interfaith home, which is becoming more common in todays world as interfaith marriages and households between Jews and non-Jews are becoming way more common. So he could take her to synagogue on Friday night/Saturday morning because that’s what his wife would’ve wanted, and on Sunday morning they go to church. In this scenario, his rationale would be he’s giving Shauna an education in both so she can choose for herself.

  3. there are a lot of Jewish people who are also athiest/agnostic. It's part of the nature of it being an ethnoreligion. Now, that doesn't make his mocking of faith necessarily make sense, but it's not a complete contradiction, either.

  4. I always saw Superintendent Chalmers as the more "stereotypical" boss character to use for gags related to dealing with your boss compared to Mr. Burns. Mr. Burns isn't just Homer's boss, he's a evil billionaire corporate executive, and there are plenty of jokes you can make with that alone, to the point where being Homer's boss almost feels like an afterthought sometimes. Chalmers feels more down-to-Earth in comparison, though admittedly, I had a hard time gauging his personality outside of his relationship with Principle Skinner until I saw this video. This is why I love your Simpsons Histories videos, Mr. Jims!

  5. funny, i once heard a term for a character whose attributes become increasingly prominent to the point of overshadowing all of their other qualities, whatever that was, but i suppose something like that would never happen on this show

  6. I dont think he struggles with his faith. He works in public education and has a no-nonsense attitude towards it. I think he's just really aggressively against any tiny aspect of religion in his schools because he knows what a disaster it would be if he let that happen and it got out. It's the manifestation of the separation of church and state through his characterization

  8. 13:50 -No..the Simpsons just made yoy care about Chalmer's relationship with Shawna through a bootlegging metaphor. This may not seem that different but for the Simpsons, a weird and unlikely meathod is the assured one 100% of the time.
