Sidney Lanier was an American musician and poet born in 1842 in Georgia. He was a talented flutist and teacher who played in the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra before joining the Confederate Army during the Civil War.
Despite being imprisoned during the war, Lanier continued to study and write poetry, leading to his first collection of poems, “Tiger Lilies”, which was published in 1867. He is also known for his works “The Symphony” and “The Marshes of Glynn”.
“A Song of Love” is one of Lanier’s most well-known poems. It was published posthumously in 1884, three years after his death from tuberculosis. The poem describes the passionate love between two individuals and their desire to be together despite any obstacles that may come their way. The poem’s message centers on the eternal nature of love and how it can transcend all barriers and hardships.
