Today, we’re checking out a really interesting video I wawtched recently by Munching Orange discussing whether or not Pokemon should’ve stayed 2D and what my opinions on that are.

Before this video even starts, I am screaming to the top of my lungs for QUALITY REAL TIME COMBAT 3D Pokémon. Screaming it to the top of my lungs. Screaming to the top of my lungs for a game that revamps everything and tells the story of Pokémon adventures and stays true to its tonality in a open 3D environment that’s just as raw and dangerous as the mangas universe is. All of these things are HIGHLY unlikely and probably have nothing to do with the video. But that’s my two cents 😂
After complaining about them not getting better graphics I actually miss the 2d art style x)
2d is easier to animate compared to 3d, if gamefreak kept 2d we wouldn't have dex cuts.
One of my big projects right now is a webcomic with a monster taming story. If it succeeds, then I'll proceed to making a game. I'll be sure to have it be in 2D, in the Gen 5 style with animations (for battles, at least).
Games like Digimon next order and Cybersleuth show you can have great 3d graphics. The last good animation 3d pokemon game was battle revolution.
Easiest way to get games back to what they were stop putting thousands and thousands of dollars on cosmetic items what has killed games is things like fortnight they see oh we don't have to do anything we can just sell nothing and make the game work.
Yeah they should, Pokémon in the same style as Octopath Traveler would save the series for me. The fan made videos made in this style look amazing
I think pokemon can and should be 3d.
But.
I also think that 2d is Gamefreaks greatest strength and comfort zone. Its clear that the transition to 3d hasn't been kind and quick for them. Imo, keep Gamefreak on pokemon creatively but let them work on 2d projects. Give the "next big 3d game" to more competent developers. Gamefreak can even assist them with model designs and etc, but that "dream 3d game" that every one wants is never going to come from Gamefreak. Not any time soon, anyways.
Bring back dream world
Love this video gym leader Ed.
Primarina is girlypop and is my favorite
2.5d or 2d pokemon would be nice to see again but i highly doubt that the higher ups at pokemon company would allow it. Theyve fallen for that triple A western game studio mindset where theyve convinced themselves that 3d=better, mobile games are the future of gaming and all kids have adhd.
They think kids will get distracted and wander off to chase butterflies and kotaku and ign will cry, pout and refuse to review it if the game isnt super hand holdy and easy and theyre probably right about the second part of that statement tbh.
I think yes and no. I think the players that grew up with Pokemon dont care about the 3D as much, but I think getting younger kids/newer generation to play it, it would have to be 3D.
I’m less concerned about 3d and more concerned about them making too many unnecessary gimmicks and bad-built worlds
I don't mind the 2D, 3D or 2.5D style I have no preference or nostalgic for any of them even though my first pokemon game was Yellow on the gameboy colour. I have liked all the changes in artstyle the games have gone through however I do agree that it feels though 3D was a good change for the franchise it came at a massive cost of optimisation and content which really does suck.
When it comes to DLC i am kinda indifferent I have no issue with extra mons, story and stuff to do but i feel the price they ask is far to much then you have to wait in-between DLC's just to get your full money's worth.
But i always hated the method of here's a 3rd game with some slight changes and improvements approach personally same with ultra sun and moon, I feel going for an actual sequel and not just expansions black and white and black and white 2 was a great example of pokemon sequels being done decently.
Like i still love the franchise but i really hope it irons out all these issues sooner rather than later even if we did have to go back to pixel art style.
i dont want a unova remake, remaster, legends game or NONE of that at all. i want them to leave all these older games alone. im tired of them purposefully making bad games cause of complacency. yeah theyll sell well cause the fanbase is complacent and doesnt care
USUM was definitely the "lets see what we can get away with" game
Edit: now that I'm done the video, I agree with almost everything you're both saying. Well done by both of you for exploring a lot of the different angles on this subject.
I like both art styles. I don't mind the art style as long it's done in a good and positive way
pokemon black and white 3 with aethermancer graphics, the story would be about the fusion of the three dragons kyurem reshiram and zekrom, the team plasma would rely in future paradox pokemon because are robots and want to free real pokemon
If it were in @d, they would be able toa afford to actually change the sprites between gens.
Could have done both, like dragon quest 11
Sword and shield looks leagues ahead of scarlet violet
Ultra sun and ultra moon games arent sequels but there the hard mode
this video is just nothing but hindsight if pokemon stayed 2d people would cry they want 3d because they dont know the hell we're in right now just like how people cry to go back to 2d because 3d is such a lazy messy shit show currently and at that point it wont even matter what style they do it in if they dont have time to make it function
One thing that stood out to me was he claimed that a large part of Gamefreak took a lot of time to convert 2d sprites into 3d models at about 10:08. Wasn't that Creatures Inc. that did that work?
I AM THE EXACT SAME WITH MY POKÉMON COLLECTION!!! I have all of mine in Ultra Moon as well.
my problem with 3D pokemon isn't just laziness, some of the models outright murder a pokemon's appearance. Aggron in official art and in it's sprites looks different from how he looks in 3D mocels, and it aint just stances (which do help tbf). do a side by side comparison, the small differences matter and Aggron just looks clumsy and silly in comparison. hell, just look at new aggron vs Colosseum/Battle revolution.
It'd be interesting if there were 2D spin-off games. It'd be a nice place for experimentation of multiple visual styles.
Speaking of spin-off games, I also wish for another game focused on double battles. Doubles are painfully underutilized despite how much potential they have, and the GameCube duology could use a remake, sequel or spiritual successor polishing the gameplay.
Being honest, the Gen 1 sprites are actually some of my favorites. Sure, they don't represent the actual Pokemon as well, but there was an ugliness to them I liked. Wigglytuff's Red/Blue sprite, for example, had these overkill-sized eyes that made Mr. Wiggles look creepy and sinister, which I think, coupled with the sprite's overall size pressence, made Mr. Wiggles look more badass than it does in later games. Or, Raticate's Yellow sprite looks so evil and sinister. His hands are launching straigh at you, looking as if he's about to cast dark magic or "UUUUNLIIIMIIITEEEED POWER!!!" at you.
And then, there's Snorlax, one of my all-time favorites. I just find him adorable. He's all about size presence from his great big belly to his great big feet. He has such an intimidating figure just because of the sheer blockiness and size presence to him, yet he also has this… harmlessness to him. His cry is simple and cute, being just a soft "Bloop" instead of a loud, menacing cry. His face looks peaceful and innoccuous, and when he smiles as his belly jiggles a bit in 3D games, it's the most adorable thing ever. He's a monster I just can't help but love in 2D and 3D, as he has a design that can switch from huggable, lovable lug to confidently imposing.
But, specifically in Red/Blue, his pose shows off those big stompers more than his belly, which is it's own brand of intimidating, as I wouldn't want to get kicked by them, yet Yellow has that perfect balance that just never got captured again, IMO. In addition, Red/Blue's sprite has a more confident face than you'd see in Gen 2, where he's letting out a loud yawn in Yellow, both having their own intimidation factor to it.
I guess what I'm trying to say is… Gen 1 sprites were intimidating. They haven't really captured that as well in later games, since the sprites and designs got cleaned up. I still like later games and designs, and Gen 1 games are FAR from my favorites. (Gen 4 is, actually). But as far as the sprites go, I just have the softest spot for Gen 1's sprites more than later gens.
I played XY for the first time recently, and sincerely, I think a lot of the animations feel more lively and polished than last few main games, especially for human characters. I always hear the complaint that a lot of pokémon look dead in 3D, which I mostly agree, but looking at them in gen 6, it feels like there was a genuine effort but they gave up halfway.
Sure, the story is half-baked, even though the backstory is pretty good. Sure, there are a bunch of rivals, which combined get the same screen time as a single one. But the game itself is pretty good.
I feel like they didn't plan properly how much time they'd need to make a proper transition to 3D and the issues that came with it just snowballed with which passing generation.
To me, it's just funny how pokémon fans went from hating XY for its lack of post game content to reminiscing about the good-old times of Gen 7 when the game were mostly bug free :v
2.5D or just actually get a team n time to make the games, but they can't do either
Pokemon making games for adults is maybe my last want in life
I don’t think one is better but I do think gamefreak is significant better at creating graphics and environments in 3D so there’d be less reasons to cut corners in development time.
Obviously something is wrong with Pokémon currently. A lot of care has not been given to the series. I don’t think it’s a huge ask from Pokemon to come out with a BOTW/TOTK game. I think their next goal could be 2D Traditional, 3D story heavy game, and then spin off ( Coliseum, Stadium, Let’s go etc). If they want to pump out games they need multiple branches. You could argue they are doing that now but it’s like App Store games. Go big or go home Pokemon you are walking on ice right now.
With the new trend of HD 2D like OCTOPATH? yes … hell yes!!
I know I have the unpopular opinion but I have always HEEAVILY preferred 3d. I was ecstatic when nexomon announced they're going full 3d. A big reason I loved x/y so much was because of that leap.
Legends Arceus was better than SwSh and ScVi because it had a stronger focus on both it core gameplay loop and because it took advantage of the move to 3D with expansive and interesting areas but didn't try to cram everything into a single seamless no-loading-screen world. All ScVi needed to do was build upon the foundation Legends Arceus set down with more regions and towns/cities, some interesting missions/quests associated with cities and regional NPC's, and have some sort of depth to an endgame (be it a mysterious roguelite dungeon, or a battle frontier, or expeditions sort of like Dragon Quest IX's post-game maps, etc). It would have been an absolute banger of a game and shut down any debate about whether the move to 3D itself is the problem or not.
I’m over Game Freak. Give the new gens to Genius Sonority or Bandai Namco. Take away shiny locks and bring back the great features like Battle Frontier.
With how they make they're games sticking to 2d to avoid haveing to cut features while still releasing the games at the break neck speed they wre is probably for the best however if they just let they're 3d games bake in the oven like idk 2-3 years longer we could get some amazing 3d games as it is now i dont really believe in game freaks 3d stuff with how rushed these recent releases are i want them to reliese theyre full potential but it doesn't seem like they will
In my opinion pokemon should stay 3D, it was a step in the correct direction, however similar to how in the 2D era they had 3D spin-offs nowadays we could totally have HD-2D spin-offs while keeping the main games in 3D, since for me the spin-offs where always a way to content different niches in the saga
No matter what other arguement is brought before me in terms of pokemons content decline, i can absolutely guarantee that a majority of any complaint about it, if not all of them IMO, can all be traced back to the god awful idea of trying to get a new game out every year or so. Time crunches are the killers of creativity, and it shows with how much content we could have had that almost always ends up scrapped/DLC'd because the developers NEVER have time to just put it in the game in the first place. it's happened to various other games and franchises, and pokemon is clearly no exception to the rule. Rush hour has, and always will be, a nightmare for all involved.
haven't watched the video yet but my opinion just going on the title is i feel they should produce both a 2d classic visuals version for the OG gamers nostalgia as well as 3d games they can use to push the visuals to their limits for those who prefer a high fidelity game, i mean they have enough money to hire the staff to pump out multiple styles of pokemon games to satisfy everyone's preference
