In Bihar’s Begusarai, a judge was taken by surprise during a regular court hearing on July 19. An undertrial, standing before him, unwrapped a paper containing chapatis that he had secretly brought from Begusarai district jail. “The chapatis given to eat are either burnt or not properly made. I brought these chapatis as evidence of the poor quality of food served to the inmates,” Ram Jappo Yadav told district and sessions judge Satish Jha. The accused alleged that some of the VIP inmates were given special treatment while others were served substandard food.
