Prolific writer, producer Deadric Malone aka Don Robey record label owner of those wonderfully presented labels Back Beat, Sure-Shot, Peacock & Duke. Forged strong connections with Detroit, again evident with this dual release featuring the talents of two Motor City influencers, Funk Brother Johnny Griffith & writing partner Richard Green combine on this Northern Soul current favourite “One More Chance” featuring Griffith’s irresistible piano rhythms, bolstered by considerate horns that don’t overwhelm the arrangement. Allowing Shirley’s beautifully rich vocal to state her case, as she pleads for “one more chance” through Richard Green’s meaningful lyrics. A beseeching dancer that lifts the spirits, as you absorb this storyline of hope.
Flip it over for the side that first made waves when Dave Godin briefly released it on his legendary Monmouth Street, London based Soul City label. “The Star” was the side that fitted into the Northern Soul landscape at the time. This one written by Deadric Malone himself is a ferocious sister stomper with all the ingredients for a favourable allniter drop, that would be refreshing tune to revive.
Johnny Griffith & Richard Green’s relationship with Don Robey and his Houston, Texas set of labels continued into 1969 with they collaborated again on the Soul Twins – She’s The One. Back Beat 599.
