Shinkansen Oversized Luggage Rules & Storage | JR Tokyo Station

Over-Sized luggage 🧳 on the Shinkansen 🚅 requires a special ticket reservation. It’s free but they’re limited. 160cm to 250cm is considered oversized to large bags. Thats 160cm length x width x height. If it’s more the 250cm in total size, its too big for the train.

  1. Thank you very much for this, it is extremely helpful info. Question: if you have a JR rail pass can you upgrade for a fee to ride the faster Shinkansen lines? if so then how?
Thanks to your channel I am in a much better place to get the most out of my visit following Golden week. Thanks again.

  2. Oversized Luggage for the Shinkansen is considered between 160cm and 250cm. Length X Width X Depth. You have to make a reservation (it’s free) for a oversized luggage seats 💺 they’re limited. If you’re bags are over 250cm in total size, you cannot bring them on the Shinkansen! Please take note: you’ll have to leave it in Tokyo, Osaka. Send it to your next destination by Takyubin available at Convenient stores and hotel lobbies. I’d highly recommend not bringing oversized luggage. Pack a day bag and a medium sized wheeled suitcase that can go over head. I was told you CAN reserve oversized luggage seats online the office JR site. Leave me any questions below: -John ^_^

  3. i think i would still book an oversized luggage seat despite my bags being under the size limit. As a female traveller, it is a bit difficult to lift a 15-20kg bag onto the overhead space

  4. John, something that always occurs to me when you do your streams. It seems you speak fairly loud and I notice Japanese looking at you at times. One thing that I know it’s always being mentioned is how loud foreigners are when speaking.
Do you ever feel like you are being a nuisance or not behaving according to what is expected behavior in Japan?

  5. Going by JR Central's website, 160-250cm luggage needs to be booked on board (sum of length/width/height). A Samsonite OC2Lite 68cm suitcase is around the 150cm mark in total dimensions as a reference ("Medium")

  6. Oh my gosh- my boy would have LOVED doing this. I think he would still love it, even thought he's 26 now LOL. I had no idea all the parents and their little boys stand on the platforms and wave, jump up and down, etc. This looks so fun! I love the Shinkansen ❤

  7. Hi John,
I think the measurement of oversized luggages was incorrect in your video. The correct measurements i think should be 160cm. If the luggages are over 250cm, then they are not allowed on the train. Please feel free to let us know if I was mistaken. I'll text you a DM on IG as well. Thank you.

  8. Thanks for the video John. One question that didn't get answered: do the same rules apply for green car? Maybe there is a bit more leeway if you're paying a premium price for a ticket. Not sure though, if you know that would be very helpful. Cheers

  9. Hello from Lithuania Europe Union 🇱🇹 i don't know what word Leo first said but when i heard him say Shinkansen in his little voice it was so cute,he is cute🙂❤️ thanks for the information John, hope you and your family doing well…when we traveling with airplanes we can have only 10 or 15 kg suitcases, when we travel with trains i've seen people bring a bigger suitcase with one or two traveling bags,we have areas to put them for safe keeping we strap them and we can sit in our seats not worrying for them to fall over or that our bags are oversized

  10. Hi John we had to book for oversized luggage as we are staying at USJ for 20 days. We had no problem booking at JR ticket office. Although there are 5 of us we had to sit in 2 different carriages. It was no big deal. But thanks for the update. Hello from Downunder now in Osaka 🦘🦘🦘🦘🦘

  11. Hi guys, great yall having a great time with the trains. Not only boys enjoy trains but girls too. Leo playing with you ,dad.
I'm in my 50s and I would be in awe with the trains. I used to live near train tracks here in Oklahoma USA.

  12. I have 2 questions that you might be able to help me with. I'm coming back to Japan with a few friends for 3 weeks next April and I got the rail pass through one of the many online vendors. Am I still able to reserve seats online if I didn't buy it through Jr directly? Also, I'm sure one of my friends will pack way too much and bring an oversized suitcase. Do the green cars also have the space for luggage? We got the green rail pass because the price was so cheap.

Edit: haha you just mentioned the Delaware river. I live in Delaware and no one ever knows where we are lol

  13. Will consider this service when I travel again (not on March 2023 because we are just going to stay in Tokyo). I had a hard time securing an area where I can store my luggage in 2018 when I travelled from Osaka to Tokyo via Shinkansen and nearly falling off the stairs somewhere in Osaka because there were no elevators or escalator.

  14. We just did this last Monday from Tokyo to Nagoya with 2 large and 2 small suitcases. The station employee had to check a few trains, and we ended up on a Hikari instead of Nozomi, but overall it was super easy. We'll be doing the same in reverse next Sunday or Monday.

Edit: In our case nobody ever measured our bags, and nobody even checked our tickets on the train.

  16. Travelling in Japan with a JR Rail pass on the Shinkansen was an amazing experience. One thing that made it great was that you could just hop on hop off with no bookings and no over size baggage issues. It was so fast, easy and generally efficient. I can understand why this is being done, but I will miss that part of the experience.

  17. Hi John: What size luggage can fit on the rack above? If you are in the green car (going from Tokyo to Osaka and from Kyoto to Tokyo), does it have the same amount of room for large luggage as the regular cars? And would you make reservations in the same way?

  18. Also note the arbitrary shaped baggage such as bicycles, musical instruments, skis, and strollers don't require reservations if they're above 160cm, but may wish to reserve an oversized baggage area.

  19. Thanks John, it's a good reminder to us all. I always used to try to book the back seats to store luggage. At some point my friend got wise and looked into a luggage forwarding service like Yamato Transport offer. It's quite reasonably priced and it made traveling around more convenient as we weren't worried about what to do with the suitcases. I certainly found it to be a great option. Thanks for the video.

  20. How old is Leo? He is so cute. I am planning a trip Japan and also taking my, will be, 9 months old baby. Will under month old baby needs to buy a ticket.
I am concern about the baggage size limit.
Also if you dont mind, in your next trip, can you do Shinkansen ride with Leo and how the experience is like?

  21. I was in Kodama last week and unfortunately there's stil lot of people with oversize luggage that i believe didn't reserve for baggage, bcoz they just bring it to seat and even there's one girl that put the luggage in the floor bcoz it keeps on moving.. And nobody care, even the employee..
