Great presentation!! It was your show that launched a thought process for me that led me down a rabbit hole about why the great silence. Thank you for all you have done to invigorate a dialog about the future of humanity and imagining alien civilizations! Are there any platforms in which dialog about the Fermi Paradox are vibrant and interesting? (Meaning multiple threads of dialog that is not just a show with comments)
One part of the thought process i have gone down is that you so often bring up that hiding major war and/or mega structures and/or hiding a civilization are all very hard to do, if not impossible.
This is why i asked about Dyson Swarms being indistinguishable from a Nicoll Dyson beam. Are there any megastructures that can be built that to a civilization watching it be built would not be a potential threat?
(A given civilization would not have to build it around their own star, but choose a star that suits the purposes of the device bring built, especially if it is a weapon.)
My next point is that could any civilization ever fully trust that a given mega structure could not quickly be weaponized? How could any assurance of peaceful intent be sufficient?
Might it be complete hubris to build such a structure at all if there are hundreds of technological civilizations in a galaxy that could witness it being built? Wouldnβt building a Dyson Swarm be saying βOur civilization has determined that all the civilizations watching us build this megastructure together could not challenge our military might!β
You said when you answered my question that if say humanity saw a Dyson Swarm bring built a thousand light years away that we better contact the other species. How does a real dialog happen with 1000 year lag-time each direction? This seems like it would be real problem.

At some point humans have to come to the realization that we are going to hand over the day to day governance of civilisation to a "mind/minds" that isnt human.

Thank you so much for mentioning how planets require maintenance. Too many times i see people making that mistake & claiming that because planets "don't need maintenance" people would want to live on them as opposed to habs.
If we're sending people on years- or decades-long missions to the outer planets, we'll need to greatly improve our skills in psychological evaluation. Or give astronauts access to TVTropes and they'll just sit in the chair for ten years going "One more click…"

What if the pyramid structures doted around the planet at specific latitudes and longitudes were ancient Ham Radios?
If the piezoelectric effect were generated by the mass of the pyramids, while the buildings surrounding were equipped with stone analog logic gates you could say the entire Giza Plateau was a circuit board the size of a city. While harnessing that much geomagnetic energy it might be possible to tune the occilating frequency output from the obelisk towers. Thus turning it into an ancient two way antenna/ Ham Radio. If the output carrier wave were specifically tuned to the inverse harmonic resonance of the ionosphere you could, in theory, bounce data packets across the world to every other pyramidal structure set as a two way receiving antenna, simultaneously. Theoretically a 12,500 b.c.e. to 30,000 b.c.e world wide telegraph network of the most rudimentary design might have been possible.
Think of the quartz crystals used as transducers, and signal attenuators housed within the logic gates which comprised the circuitry.
One caveat. All this obviously assumes that boolean logic, and binary data transformations were harnessed to disambiguate between background radio noise and carrier waves.
Now the hurdle of proving it which will undountedly be impossible. Because the passage of tens of thousands of years has erased everything not made of megalithic stone.
But I digress.
I'm clearly not an electrical, or computer, engineer. But if you can entertain the possibility by making several quantum leaps of faith I'd love to hear any alternative theories you might have.

I have a depressing thought about technologically advanced beings. I think that internal conflict between inhabitants is a major factor in driving innovation and advancing knowledge in general.
I hope that without conflict, intelligent beings still find a reason to advance tech beyond the need for security and abundance.
This is the first time that I've heard you clearly define the centuries that must pass before any of these future ideas might be started. I'd like to encourage you to put such a clear time line into all of your essays. As a science futurist its just good form to be clear about all the concepts and timelines being discussed. π

Isaac – very good presentation even with "technical problems". It's been a long time since I've done any programming so I would hope this suggestion might have some merit. Use a high level shell program that controls what goes to the auditorium screen, selecting between your main Power Point presentation and a simple shell program that plays your videos one at a time, in series, on command.
Isaac – I have been told (I'll have to research it) that long cylinders spinning around their long axis, if things are moving around inside them, are dynamically unstable, i.e., they tend to change their rotation to a different axis. That's why Kalpana One is "stubby".

This show is great on the hard science topics, I wonder if we could ever look into what sort of evolutions in law weβd need as an upward bound civilization.
Right now we treat space as a friendly common area because itβs so hard to get up there. But will we have a Super- National entity coordinating orbital flight paths?
