In this unique Ramadan course, Self-Knowledge: Towards a Qur’anic Anthropology, Hamza Yusuf examines Imam al-Raghib al-Asfahani’s Tafsil al-nash’atayn wa tahsil al-sa‘adatayn (An exposition of the two creations with means to the acquisition of the two felicities). Through the lens of the Qur’an, Imam al-Raghib, an eleventh-century polymathic exegete, presents a masterful study of the human being. Unlike any other work in the Islamic tradition, this short book leads a serious student into a completely Qur’anic perspective on what it means to be human, but more importantly, it explicates the means to achieve our God-given potential to realize true humanity (insaniyyah) in this life. In a time when postmodernist and nihilistic ideas of the self confound many, Imam al-Raghib provides a much-needed antidote by grounding us in true Qur’anic knowledge of the self, which results in knowledge of the universe, and in the meeting place of those two knowledges, one arrives at certainty of the Creator of one’s self and one’s world.

  1. The sheikh has aged so well spiritually. Allah has increased him in knowledge and gentleness. Allah placed compassion in his speech. I look at him and think how kind Nabi Muhammad SAW must have been. He the Prophet SAW must have been thousands of time more gentle and compassionate.

  3. Abu Darda reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Verily, the angels lower their wings for the seeker of knowledge. The inhabitants of the heavens and earth, even the fish in the depths of the water, seek forgiveness for the scholar. The virtue of the scholar over the worshiper is like the superiority of the moon over the stars. The scholars are the inheritors of the Prophets. They do not leave behind gold or silver coins, but rather they leave behind knowledge. Whoever has taken hold of it has been given an abundant share.

  4. This lecture is excellent. Mash'Allah. The title should be revised to refer to the original text and it's subject matter i.e. Imam Al-Raghib's (RH) study of Human Nature (Insaaniyat)

  5. I love Sheik Hamza Yusuf deeply for all he has taught me and how instrumental he's been in shaping my understanding of Islam and how to embody good character. I appreciate his intellect , his depth, and in his breadth of knowledge; his understanding of Islam along with being America has made him relatable and his teachings relevant to American Muslims like myself. I believe he is a friend of Allah. I feel that deeply in my heart. We are so blessed to have him. May Allah bless you Sheik and all those you love and make you among the very very highest in Jannah and closest to Allah and His Messenger. You are a true gift to all of us from Allah Swt. Thank you for all you done for the ummah and helping us learn about our Lord so we can love Him and obey Him – there is no greater gift than that .

  6. To the normal people out there, I listened to the speech so much times, still I find I hear new new things each time I re-hear. I wonder at what my condition would be if I was present there with no chance to listen to it again.
