Search and rescue underway for missing Titanic tour submersible

It’s a race against the clock in the search and rescue operation to locate any signs of a missing 21-foot submersible and the five people on board who were attempting to tour the Titanic wreckage. “Our entire focus is on the wellbeing of the crew and every step possible is being taken to bring the five crew members back safely,” OceanGate said in a statement. NBC’s Tom Costello reports for TODAY.

  1. If the submersible was till intact, it would have been found by now. Unfortunately, the probability that the sub imploded is high. The rescue will turn into a recovery and use yet more resources. If the people involved were not billionaires, would the US and Canadian CG's and the Navy be spending all of this time and efforts? The loss of any human life is tradgec, but the people involved knew the risks.

  2. This sub has a 40 dollar game console controlling it, is this a joke. Didnt want any ex military help because they're 50 year old boring white guys, another joke? They'll get 2 be part of the Titanic forever now

  3. How naïve that so-called experts insist that the banging sounds are deliberate from the passengers. Would any of the passengers be STUPID enough to wait 30 MINUTES in between bangs? Certainly they’d be smart enough to know that banging every TEN MINUTES would make it easier for rescue parties to home in on the location! Then again, anyone who’s stupid enough to think going inside that thing was safe, joystick control and all, might just be dumb enough to believe that banging only once every half hour would be sufficient acoustic data to bring in a rescue crew! NOPE. A hardware/machinery tweak could easily be causing a banging sound every 30 minutes.

  4. It’s been missing since Sunday! Those little subs are not made for 3-day dive. Simply not enough oxygen. They can carry up to 96 hours of oxygen. This means that if they were at full capacity for the oxygen that the crew would be running out of air today. This is no longer a rescue mission, but a recovery mission.

  5. Can’t believe that several CNN and Fox reporters have asked experts, who have VERY LIMITED screen time, “how to conserve oxygen.” A FIRST-GRADER can answer this! Instead, these dingbats should be asking questions that most educated adults can’t answer, such as, “What are the three most likely scenarios of what happened?” “How was the sub originally supposed to rise back up had everything gone to plan?” “Why don’t you think the sub had a locator beacon on it?” Instead, valuable air time is wasted on explaining how to conserve oxygen, like DUH, stay calm, don’t talk, sit still, DUHH.

  6. When they design a new titan submersible, they need to add a way for rescuers to pump air into the submersible
I read it will take like 3 hours for the submersible to reach the surface
Everyone onboard would be as good as dead 🙄

  7. I wonder why ppl want to go on a submersible without having first class view of the Titanic. A submersible only have small rounded window for live view. It should have windows on each side like a passenger plane, with seats of course 😊

  8. For me i won't go down to see titanic cos this boat is bad luck so many people loss their life there ,maybe the spirit still around that make this submarine disappear 😭😭💔😭

  9. Now that bits of the submersible have been positively identified on the ocean floor we can have closure and an investigation into the causes started. The attempted rescue was an expensive operation and such tourist ventures need the same level of regulation as air flights.
