Sea Cat: The Evolution of Shipborne Defense Systems



The “Sea Cat” was developed from the Malkara anti-tank missile and was the world’s first shipborne point defense missile system, with a unique continuous-rod warhead for enhanced lethality. It used optical tracking and radio command guidance, but its performance was limited to engaging subsonic airborne targets and early subsonic anti-ship missiles.

Despite its limitations, the “Sea Cat” and its related missile systems, such as the “Tiger Cat” and “Hell Cat,” were relatively successful in the commercial market, with over 20 countries equipping them at different times, including Germany, India, and Indonesia.
