Scream 6 Interview: Melissa Barrera on Requesting Big Changes for Sam Carpenter

I always want more time at the end of interviews, but especially at the end of interviews with Melissa Barrera. I had the pleasure of having her on Collider Ladies Night in January of 2022 for the release of Scream and every single answer was thoughtful, detailed, and oozing with passion for her craft. A year later, nothing has changed in that respect, but Barrera has experienced a bit of an evolution in terms of the types of projects she finds herself drawn to and the goals she has for herself in the business.

In her latest release, Scream VI, Barrera returns as Samantha Carpenter, the daughter of Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrich) and one of the survivors of the 2022 Woodsboro massacre. When Chad (Mason Gooding), Mindy (Jasmin Savoy Brown), and her sister Tara (Jenna Ortega) move to New York City for college, Sam tags along so she can do everything in her power to keep her loved ones safe. That dedication is put to the test when a new Ghostface emerges and threatens to tear the “Core Four” apart.

In celebration of the March 10th release of Scream VI, Barrera took the time to return to Collider Ladies Night and discuss the “big perspective shift” she’s had since the release of Scream 2022.

Hear all about it in this episode of Collider Ladies Night!

  1. One of the best interviews I've seen Melissa do, open and honest and goes into detail about how she's feeling, none of the tabloid nonsense with stupid questions, she really has shown her personality here and I hope she gets offered much more bigger roles now, she's improved massively from scream 5 to scream 6, give her more freedom in her roles and she will be world class soon enough

  2. “Requesting changes”, like she’s some big Hollywood actress. She’s not Meryl Streep or Viola Davis or Angelina Jolie, she can keep her requests to herself. And scream 6 was 🥱.

  3. This movie was 🗑. Way to destroy a franchise. Maybe next time we could get barney the dinosaur to be ghostface, or any girl scouts wanna be ghostface? That's how scary the 13 year old kids that played ghostface in this movie were. This girl is supposed to be the new final girl, I can look past Billy Loomis strong Mexican heritage, but this girl has as much personality as a wet paper towel.

  4. Hated her character in Scream 5 (not Melissa, but Sam-), but she literally carried this new movie for me along with Courtney and Jenna. I could watch a new Scream movie with these 3 lead characters every year.

  5. I dont know if it's common for writers to sit down with the actors to ask them what they want to see and then essentially rewrite the script to match those wants, but damn that's awesome.

  6. 3:35 I wonder if the cast is contractually obligated to only refer to it as "Scream" even though it's obviously "Scream 5"? Reminds me of how at Nintendo the employees have to always refer to any game by it's full title, no matter how ridiculously long it is, like "New Super Mario Bros. U + New Super Luigi U".
16:05 Nvm… I guess not.. thank Bhunivelze for that though!
