Could there be life beneath the frozen and desiccated surface of Mars? There could be, according to a team of experts. Scientists say that microbes might have been surviving untroubled since the time dinosaurs walked the Earth, based on the results of a study published in the journal Astrobiology.

There is a type of bacteria that is so tough and resilient that it has been nicknamed “Conan the Bacterium”. Its true name is Deinococcus radiodurans, and this impervious microbe is resistant to freezing and heat, acid, dehydration, vacuum conditions, and radiation. It can survive enormous doses of radiation without dying, and this ability was relevant to the new research that was published.

  1. What about ice organisms? What about free water perhaps containing salts and under extreme pressure beneath the ice in the polar regions and obviously shielded from solar radiation by the ice? Per Wikipedia, in 2018 Italian scientists reported the discovery of a subglacial lake on Mars, 1.5 km (0.93 mi) below the surface of the southern polar layered deposits (not under the visible permanent ice cap), and about 20 km (12 mi) across, the first known stable body of water on the planet. Life is certainly possible there if the conditions are similar to lakes such as Vostok in Antarctica, which does contain microbial life under extreme cold and pressure. And even life just beneath the ice sheets themselves has been found. The Rovers look like they are looking for life in a literal desert. Why not go to where the water is in the search?
