  1. Side note: At 23:41, you'll notice the classic "green sky" that used to be associated with tornadoes. It's now known that the green color has nothing to do with tornadoes – it's actually caused by a high amount of hail in the updraft, which scatters most light but green. They also often mark the boundaries of the "bear's cage," the rain and hail walls surrounding the updraft (and any tornado). Storms with updrafts powerful enough to turn the sky green are almost certainly supercells, but don't always produce tornadoes.

This time was not one of those times. And tornadoes from these HP (High Precipitation) supercells not only tend to be the most powerful, but often are hidden behind the curtains of rain and hail surrounding the "bear's cage." You may not know you are even looking at a tornado until it's right on top of you. HP tornadoes are nearly as terrifying as nighttime tornadoes. Visibility is nearly zip. All you see is the bear's cage – until the bear roars out of it and eats you.

A good indicator that you're looking at a tornado (or deadly straight-line winds) is when you start seeing power flashes. That indicates ground-level winds powerful enough to destroy transformers, almost always indicating a tornado or VERY strong straight-line winds. In either case… if you're seeing power flashes, *GET TO SHELTER IMMEDIATELY!*

  7. Those kids need to calm down. Yes, you're running from it, but could take the opportunity to teach them something about tornados and that is better to be prepared, rather than scared.
