  1. Yet the other possibilities for Scapa as a flying boat base are out due to temperamental and submarines can't be used but given its location so close to the UK-Greenland-Iceland Gap, it seems perfect, so what is it about Scapa Flow that makes it so unsuitable for submarines or submarine base infrastructure?

  2. Scapa Flow being turned into a resupply base sounds feasible as you can reclaim land from the sea and build the facilities on top and liquefaction is not really an issue due to lack of earthquakes

  3. I would use something like container shipping to have modular base construction for short term forward supply. Something that would be fast to set up, tear down, and transport. Each container would have a specific function. e.g. sleeping quarters, lavatories, conference rooms, tool shops, supply storage. Ships or ocean barges could be used for fuel and such.

  4. Mobile base… essentially an updated destroyer tender?

I would want (i) power plant capable of producing "hotel load" for nearby ships
(ii) ability to do at least limited refuelling
(iii) space for medical services, both a degree of preventative plus a place for wounded or sick to get moved to
(iv) recreation space including showers with unlimited warm water for showers
    (v) spare parts
(vi) fabrication space for making spare parts you didn't know you needed
    (vii) 3d printer(s)
(viii) aircraft maintenance and spare parts facilities
    (ix) weapons reloads
    (x) if you are carrying a load of VLS missiles, you might as well store at least some vertically and then have some capability to launch them
    (xi) good-to-excellent C3 facilities

I would guess that this array of capabilities would probably be best provided by several ships each specialising in different areas rather than a single vessel

It could well be that the "hotel load" be provided by an old SSN or old SSN power plant

Habitation stuff could potentially be done with a STUFT liner or cruise ship

Loading spare parts and other stuff into containers would seem to make sense from a convenience point of view given the infrastructure already built around those sizes

I guess I can see about 6 ships being needed for the different bits and some might rotate back to home base to get more [X] while being replaced by other ships while others remain on station for longer

  5. About your question. To start wrapping my mind about forward bases I took a look at what the USN had — and my brain dehydrated by the previously unknown to me Puller class (Expeditionary Mobile Base). With no Iron Bru I'll swill my brain with Faygo Moonmist and Vernors while I get my brain out of Nimitz's swim across the Pacific and bring myself into the 21st century – maybe Drach is right –"they built ships after 1947?"

  6. Thanks for the Video.
I think that a mobile base system should be made up of as much container modules as possible. Energy would be provided by genrators. If the climate of the place where the base is set up allows it maybe some solar pannels can be used to bolster the energy output. However these pannels need a way to be camoflaged maybe the color can be made less obvious or they can be camoflaged in other ways that dont hinder their usage. That could help with surving times when the base cant be supplied with everything it needs or some of the supplies the base would need for its normal running can be given to the troops. That leads me to battery module that can save up some enrgy and is used to recharge all the wonderfull electric devices a modern militaey operates. i.e. hanheld GPS systems, small unmanned vehicles, light/laser modules for rifles, electric tools that are used to perform quick repairs and so on. Next would be a Administration module were all the people that organize the endevour work in. Next would be a repair shop module that houses the tools that are needed for repairs. Here it depends on what function the base is meant to perform i.e. is it only a small base that has some trucks or is it a major base that needs to serve things like tanks or ifvs. A repair tent maybe a option if greater repairs need to be executed. The supplies can be storraged in their original transport containers, for that a national container reserve could be helpfull. Some goods need specialized containers that can provide cooling for example for food or artillery charges. Fuel containers exist hoever I would try to camoflage them as normal containers with false side and roofplates. For living I would use containers too. For defenses the more complex systems like missile defense come a with their own vehicles or some of their subsystems are container based anyway so not much new here for the rest Hesco barriers are used. A module for comunicartons is part of the system, but this module is nit used for possible interaction with unmaned vehicles, for that I think a special module is needed.

  7. Playing off one against the other sounds a bit like the two enemies that Big Brother was leading Airstrip One against in 1984.

Winston Smith couldn't remember which was which.
