'Scandalous': Grenfell tragedy is a major institution of failure | The Reaction

Grenfell Tragedy, the Trouble with Harry, and Labour’s Latest Lurch.

Sarah and Andrew look at the final Grenfell inquiry report: a series of damning indictments, corporate subterfuge and a culture of dishonesty and ask why the community and its people were so let down in their hour of need.

And as Angela Rayner threatens to quash Margaret Thatcher’s Right to Buy policy and Rachel Reeves pushes on with her plan to cut winter fuel payments for thousands of pensioners, we ask will this be the legacy that could be the government’s undoing.

Plus, if politicians insist on dancing, then can they do it under cover of darkness and in their own homes, please? And will he, or won’t he? Is the Duke of Sussex finally coming home?

Sarah Vine and Andrew Pierce bring their own insight, opinion and reaction (clue is in the title) to the biggest stories of the week.

  1. I agree with everything you've discussed. As a pensioner, I'm disgusted with this government. I'd like to see them try to live on a basic state pension. The winter fuel allowance was a once-a-year treat. It's not as if the baby boomers becoming old is a surprise as they've had the knowledge of this happening since the end of the war! I look forward to next weeks Response.

  2. Ffs ? Locals don’t all leave. Maybe your one friend does, but a lot of locals love it, and certainly don’t appreciate you speaking about it like this. Why not use your platform to tell the gov to provide toilets for the event , because it certainly brings in tourists from all over the country and the world.

  5. Successive governments both Labour and Tory failed to have adequate policies in place that would not have allowed the shoddy renovations, that did not put in place more stringent building controls and adequate health and
    safety.
Past Tory governments have failed to quickly prioritise the removal of this dangerous cladding from other high rise buildings something that doesn't seem to be a priority for the new Labour government either. There were a total of 4613 buildings over 11 meters in height that had unsafe cladding, as of September 2024 there are still 2,300 buildings which have had no remedial work even started. The government has sent billions in weapons to Ukraine and Israel but have left thousands of people terrified that their homes and very lives are at risk due to dangerous building materials that have already left 72 people dead and left victims and their families dealing with the trauma and loss they have had to endure. Victims who are still waiting for those responsible to be held accountable under the law.
