We were delighted to welcome writer-director and former programmer Jane Giles to the Cinema of Ideas to discuss London’s legendary Scala cinema (1978-1993) and her new documentary Scala Club Cinema — which tells the riotous inside story of the infamous sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll rep house which inspired a generation during Britain’s turbulent Thatcher years.

Recorded on 18 January 2023.

  1. This this very cool. I missed the original upload so thanks for re-uploading it here. I lived in London for three years 1988-90 and was a regular at the Scala. All the films that are still near and dear to my heart are films I saw for the first time at Scala all-nighters, the Romero films, the Argento films, the Evil Dead films, etc etc etc. I've got Jane's book and can't wait for the film. Unfortunately I (most likely) won't be able to watch it at as cinema screening as I'm on the continent now, but hopefully there'll be a dvd or bluray.
