On 5 May 1980 the SAS stepped out of the shadows and onto the world stage as they undertook the most audacious counter terrorism response the world had seen.
The Iranian Embassy in London was besieged by 6 Iranian nationals who had taken 29 hostages. Once they had shot a civilian on UK soil, the Prime Minister authorised direct action by the Special Air Service.
