  1. We never saw a beach there. We went in a boat to an island and we're told that was where the best shells were to be found. Ding Darling is the only real "attraction" there!
We went 30 years ago and stopped at the Ding Darling Sanctuary. We were looking around and saw a different plaques for people that had donated money to help the birds. That's when my other half found a plaque that had my last name on it which is an unusual name. And it turns out it was a $10,000 donation to save a bird! That caused me to think he must live there somewhere. So we got in touch with him and found out he lives out on the point. So that means that whatever direction You look he has a view of everything. The golf course, the bay, the ocean, whatever they are all called! The houses on that road are really beautiful. His is so very plain on the outside! The inside was a whole different story!
The next day we went to that Beach with all the shells. The best shelling Beach to go on just about any place. We went out in a private boat to get to it I believe. We were told by the guy there would not be any shells because of hurricane had come through a few days before and they were gone! And he was right. Not one shell did we see!

  5. So glad you made it to Sanibel! I have been there 3 times over the last several years. We always go in late January. We have been so lucky that every time the weather & shelling were great! I live in the mountains of western NC, which is another beautiful place!!

  6. My daughter and Aunt have this app on their new iPhone 12 called the identifier, you take a picture and the app is able to tell you what you have, rocks, plants, trees, maybe it would work for shells!

  7. Would soaking them overnight in oil make them absorb more of the oil for a long lasting shine? I know you soak the gem stones in mineral oil for days.
The barnacles just add more character, made by the sea!

  8. I'm really enjoying watching you learn about shells and shelling. I have always loved shells of all kinds.
When my older sister and I were about 5 & 6 our parents used to take us to Toledo Beach (on Lake Erie) a lot during the summer, but the only shells we ever found were some tiny, long, skinny shells that were in shades of grey or brown (about 1/2" long).
God bless Beth for sending you that book…it's beautiful!

  10. Have you thought about contacting a community college to see if they can hook you up with a student majoring in aquatic science (or something like that.) ? Maybe some of the students might be looking for someone that has shells that need identification and that would match up with a community college project. Just a thought. I love seeing your shells and have always picked up shells every time I go to the beach. We live on a river in eastern VA and it empties into the Chesapeake Bay. Good luck with your shell project. I'm looking forward to seeing your frame project. Good luck to you. I hope you find a huge conch shell.
