Salt & Tar: Ep.204

A huge thank you to Spaulding Marine Center and to Heather for setting it up! This place was an amazing spot to visit. You can visit by foot too!
(Spaulding Marine Center & Store, 600 Gate 5 Rd, Sausalito, CA 94965)

We loved getting the opportunity to step aboard the oldest sailing vessel on the United States West Coast, FREDA. If you’re interested look up the massive rebuild effort. The photos of the amount they had to take away and rebuild is mind blowing. You can also sail her: https://www.spauldingcenter.org/freda/

If you want to get involved and volunteer at the center they are always getting their hands into some very interesting projects:

  1. You are both very nice. Ruth does a lot of the story telling and …. we know … the editing. You are a lucky man Garrett. Ruth is very helpful, comitted, charming and …. even keeled! Which is a nice qualifty to have for sailor. 😎

  2. Messing with Ruth's "counter-balance" on camera, shame on you Garrett. Though she is the one to keep the footage post-edit. πŸ˜†πŸ˜†πŸ˜†.
Y'all are still just too cute together.
So cool to be on the wooden boat tour for those kiddos. Garrett handled that well, with the youngsters. I'm quite impressed. He'll make a great dad some day.

  3. Ruth – when docking, get the bow line on loose, and then get the stern line on loose, take the boat hook with u when you jump ashore – quick – it’s important to secure both then adjust, if it’s blowing – very critical

  4. Why? Why? Why ded you deside to use that long gassline and on the inside??? Have you gotten an ALARM fore it? When you dock in that lovely wheater you sure better back the boat INN. Why? When you have to live again you sure dont have controll over the weater and bay docking end in its waaaay easier to go out : )

  5. I see that these two aren’t very environmentally focused since everything goes into the ocean – coffee pot. Redaviva doesn’t have grey water tanks so everything goes over the side. Even the toilet is basically a bucket with a lid, no waiting for a pump out there.

  6. Hi,after you have completed sailing trials,I cannot wait to see Rediviva pushed with some hard sailing, she certainly looks as if she can take it.cheers,Roly πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§.PS.when I was an apprentice marine engineer in the UK the company that i worked for paid my college fees.

  7. I had horrible back pain for years after I stopped riding bulls. I finally broke down and found a really good chiropractor, he changed my life. Been pain free for 6 years. I don't ignore it or just think it will go away, I did that for years and it just got worse.

  9. Inspired me to visit Spaulding Boatworks. My dad ordered plans and a kit San Francisco Pelican and had it built Hawaii around 1965. I learned how to sail in it. It was hull number 222.
If you’re ever in Santa Cruz or Moss Landing would be great to meet you both.

  10. Hey guys, the boat is looking great. Garett, if I may, the best thing for your back is ice. Ice, ice and more ice. 30 min on 30 min off and fall asleep with ice on the pain area. Good luck! πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘

  11. Great episode. It's funny how every time a woman tells me she can do anything a man can do I cringe. However any woman that doesn't say shit, just jumps in and does… THAT'S a real woman. Often a woman that can do many things that I can't. Everyone has different skills. However someone that just does what needs doing and helps where they can is a wonderful partner, and I have seen these two doing just that. Help each other. It's why I still watch every video, even after giving up on my sailboat dream. The love that shines through almost constantly is wonderful. 😎

  12. I love seeing the way Ruth "lights up" when she gets on the tools.
Look after that back mate it is no fun when you get to my age and can't do the stuff your brain is itching to tackle.

  13. Garrett for what it’s worth. I used to suffer from lower back pain I found stretching my legs relieved 85% of the issue I know the back is very complicated with bulging discs and pinched nerves but the stretching advice I received from an older friend helped a lot. Glut and thigh stretches help alot

  14. Thank for sharing the Spaulding yard. Wonderful that a place like that still exists. So many boatyards getting swallowed by short term gain for property developers and long term loss to the water front and community that created the environment that people want to live in.
    Cheers Warren
