SAILBOAT REFIT: Repairing our broken BOOM
Welcome back to sailing NV, where we’re refitting and Open 60, originally designed and raced in the Vendée Globe.
One of our biggest jobs was to repair our 9m carbon fibre boom. In the last video we cut the boom in 2 pieces, and made a mould of the profile so that we could start building a sleeve which will be used to glue the boom back together. In this video we carry out several laminations of the sleeve. The boom is an important part of our sailboat, which needs to be capable to handling extreme loads so it’s vital that we make this repair strong and that these laminations go well…

Caio! We are Timo and Jo, an Italian and English couple with countless ocean miles under our belts. We’re refitting an ex Vendée Globe Open 60 race boat originally designed & built & raced by famous Hungarian sailor Nándor Fa. He competed in her in the 1992 Vendée Globe (round the world single handed race known as “the Everest of the seas”), finishing 5th, becoming the first non-frenchman to finish.
We are currently in Fiji giving this old gladiator a new lease on life, transforming her from an ex race boat to a performance family cruiser, which we’ll need to make both dog and baby proof! We’re planning to set sail again in Oct 2022, so with limited time&money we have plenty of challenges ahead to turn our dreams into reality&get back on the water!
Subscribe to our channel&track our progress as we release videos about our journey as well as “how to” videos about anything boat related.
Never stop to dream, never stop to sail!

I knew this channel was going to be a great source of entertainment! It's also become quite informative!! ❤️
I see that you've added subtitles since I last tuned in. That's an improvement. Unfortunately, I had to admit defeat after the second millimetre of lamination because it was the equivalent of watching paint dry. Watching paint dry with subtitles isn't my idea of recreation. You do show one thing loud and clear which doesn't need subtitles. That converting a large racing yacht is one huge pain in the ass and best avoided if at all possible 😉
Boom times are here!….All the best for your future travels on N/V……
I boarded NV last week to help these salty dogs in any way I can (limited as I'm a sailor wannabe). Already, we have built and installed a new forestay, running backstay, tuned up the engine, modified the dinghy, sealed countertops, installed new storage units below, made ginger beer, scrubbed the bottom and they even have graciously taken me to enjoy meals etc with friends in their community. Every morning I wake up on NV is surreal, and a different adventure is had every day… I can't imagine what sailing is going to be like on this incredible piece of engineering.
No gloves working with epoxy…?
I enjoyed this episode, and will be interested to see how you bond that sleeve to the two halves of the boom. As usual, the music was nice too.
Loved your video. The editing made me laugh! Ric
Not sure if I would trust it
Just go buy a new one
Sorry but that is poor quality carbon work. Full of voids and nowhere near as strong as it needs to be. Take care!
I am sorry but haven´t we already seen all of this?
Haha the editing at the end is funny!🤣😎⛵
