Royal Navy member dies while conducting 'dangerous' training exercise at night

A Royal Navy member who died when a helicopter ditched into the Channel was conducting a “dangerous” training operation that appears to have gone “horribly wrong”, a former Royal Navy officer has told Sky News.

James Gater explains more about the training exercise and said: “conducting these kind of operations, whether in peacetime or wartime, is a dangerous evolution” but “the Royal Navy says it is ready to fight tonight” so they need to conduct training in “realistic scenarios”.

He added: “I fear that this was just another training exercise that for reasons that we do not know yet went tragically wrong”.

  1. I gave everything to raise my son only to lose him and there is no support for me now as i approach retirement. Poverty is government failure. I worked hard since i was 13.
I hope this family is supported with more than words

  2. Please tell me when isn't it dangerous to get into a helicopter or any type of aircraft.

There is always a degree of danger involved in any flight, civil or military.

It's dangerous to get into a car because of a multitude of risks so saying it's dangerous is a bit stupid.

  3. The mainstream media are always quick to speculate as to cause and consequence. By the time the inquiry has concluded and the facts are established they won’t give a rats arse about it.
