  1. I thought always, the impetous Borderlinelike Burton would be the perfect Heathcliff. Never thought to see it. And he is! What different to the gentlement Olivier. Although in 1958 the TV setting was still theatralic, but he got the rough tone without impulsecontroll which is characteristic for this Baronic novel antihero. What nature force here, like his best film "Night of Iguana".
Dalton/Fiennes/Hardy got now a real concurrent in this role to compare.
And also other atmosferic parts, like the lack of sympathy in each role are nearer to ths novel.

  2. So pleased to see this. I really think Burton brings something which none of the other Heathcliff actors have done, which is to bring out the wildness in Heathcliff. Olivier's performance as early Heathcliff was a bit cringy because you could never believe him as 'rough' Heathcliff, only the well-spoken one (adaptations of My Fair Lady can often have a similar problem). Seeing as Burton was not posh but was trained to sound posh, he was a good choice for the role.
