  1. Yeah, any/all of these listicles are 100% subjective; it's down to personal preference. Some are gonna have Dylan at #1, for whatever personal reasons they think they perceive; others won't have him on the list at all. Some are gonna rank Billie higher than Ella (I do); others will have it the other way around. Etc etc.
i.e. I enjoy looking at these lists as a fun exercise, not for any universal truths.

  2. Better to see it as the list of some of the most outstanding singers… MISSING !
Where are Glenn Hughes "The Rock Voice"… Mighty Sam McClain… Jim Morrison… Ian Gillan… Jon Anderson… Greg Lake… Bon Scott/Brian Johnson… Steven Tyler… Rickie Lee Jones… Alice Cooper… Mick Hucknall… Holly Johnson… Mark Hollis… Wende Snjiders… Ann Wilson… just to name the first ones that came to mind…

  3. Actually, having processed it a while, the greatest omission in this hodgepodge list is undoubtedly Sarah Vaughan.

Michael Jackson's troubled legacy likely prevented him from appearing higher. Oh well, better list next time. I guess, this one seems out of order.

  4. Rolling Sone magazine hasn’t been relevant in decades. This list panders to the wokesters and the permanently triggered.

RS is a PC Teen Beat for the musically uninformed

  5. In 2008 they placed McCartney at #11, making sure to keep him out of the top 10… This time they made sure to keep him out of the top 25 by placing him at #26. Subtlety's never been one of their strong suits. I'm surprised they had the good sense to include Minnie Riperton, but placing her at #65 even though her mastery of the whistle register far exceeds that of Mariah Carey.

And where the hell are Ians Gillan or Anderson? Marty Balin or Grace Slick? Steve Winwood or Jack Bruce? Judy Garland or Peggy Lee? Brad Delp or Peter Cetera? Cass Elliot or Jim Morrison? Joan Jett? Pat Benatar? Ann Wilson? Edgar Winter? Sammy Hagar? Lou Christie? Frankie Valli? Out of all the wonderful voices in CSNY, they only pick Young? Not a single Righteous or Everly Brother? Neither a Flo or an Eddie? All so they can fit in more modern artists who excessively avail themselves of voice corrective technology?

This has been a test of the Emergency Rant System. If this had been an actual emergency, you would have been instructed where to go.

    Cheers!

  6. Queen never broke America and much was down to Freddie being gay, I think little Richard also a victim of this 2 great singers who should with ease make the top 20.
such a shame that in 2023 some things still resonate with people.

  7. Barbara Streisand, Scott Walker, Bob Seger, would be just some of my favourites. But ultimately a pointless but fun thing to do. Levi Stubbs, Van Morrison, Marvin Gaye, Jennifer Warnes ……so many

  8. A crazy list, insulting the older and great artists … who paved the way for younger artists. Ariana Grande above Tina Turner? What? No Annie Lennox? Christine McVie off another list? Cyndi Lauper, who really is a vocal powerhouse. Pat Benatar, or the Wilson sisters? And I discredit any list without Siouxsie Sioux. She changed everything.

They've a real nerve for putting some K Pop star on it. Fiona but no Tori Amos, or Sinead. And to leave off Mary Wells is disgraceful.

  9. We all know it is subjective, decided by people we don’t rate, creates debates amongst generations and tastes. I thought you were polite, reasonable and had interesting observations . Luckily we can disagree with opinions these days 😂

  10. Yeah, these lists are always problematic, but the main point seems to be to generate conversation/clicks. They’re also usually dominated by recency bias.

    [GRUMP MODE ON] 😡
This list has some particularly egregious rankings:

    – Ariana Grande (43) ahead of James Brown (44) and Ella Fitzgerald (45).

    – Sade (51) ahead of Tina Turner (55).

    – Mariah Carey (5) ahead anybody else in the top 20 list.

  12. Where did Al Jolsen place? 😉🙃 Seriously, back in the late 1960s and throughout the 1970s I listened to Jolsen as much as I listened to the Beatles and Pink Floyd. I still sing "Red, Red Robin' every spring.

  13. The list should be called the 'Top 200 singers our panel of Rolling Stone journalists have heard of'. It's more an indication of what they don't listen to, particularly vocalists past and present in Europe. RS and that other superfluous joke 'The R'n'R Hall of Fame' have their current agendas and should be (as Dolly Parton did) taken with a pinch of salt. More worryingly, is the BBC employing younger staff to oversee their vast misplaced archive that predates them by 40+ years!
