…my dad took me to watch this @ 9yrs old. …I turned out ok, I think.
my childhood film
There was a lot of social commentary, satire.
Re: both Kinney's and Murphy's deaths
It took me a while to figure it out but if you rewatch the scenes, they're giving plenty of clues.
After the ED-209 debacle, with the ambitious office type being elated that his Robocop program will be chosen instead, his friend remarks:
"Too bad about Kinney huh?"
Kinney was sacrificed so that his tragic death would make sure they would opt for the Robocop program instead of the ED-209 disaster.
So we can more or less say Bob Morton killed Kinney.
Regarding Murphy, the cops at the new station remark and wonder out loud why they would send a cop from a civilized area to downtown Detroit.
Cue the scene where Morton informs the Old Man that several likely candidates have been planted. Murphy was sent to Downtown to die.
Lewis is fine. Don't worry. She's back in Robocop 2. 😉
The scene where Murphy was gunned down was filmed at the former Wheeling Monnessen Steel Mill outside of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. That location was torn down years ago after the company filed for bankruptcy. However most of the movie including the OCP headquarters was filmed in Dallas, Texas. Those movie locations still exist today.
I couldn’t imagine the level of trauma a cop would have after running up too and discovering their partner’s lifeless body lying in a pool of blood. 😢
Barbara, Jones' secretary, is played by Kurtwood Smith's wife. So although in-universe it's definitely "Woof!" they were on friendlier terms than that.
Peter Weller always plays cool, interesting characters in cool, interesting movies.
She has to watch part two now
Another first timer watching Robocop? I'd buy that for a dollar!
This movie, has a prophecy included, which is currently being fulfilled, not only in the United States, but throughout the world, and is the emergence of private army. As the O.S.P, something that is clearly shown in Robocop's sequels
This is my favorite movie of 1987 the best of saga
In 2023 it's still looks good
San Francisco 2023
If you liked this movie, the main actor starred in another film called Naked Lunch that was very surreal
It's Red Forman from That 70's Show.
You hated this lol
Whats the name of the background music you use? Its very futuristic
I really think you and Carly need to check out quite possibly the greatest legs in human history. Jean Claude Van Damme. Especially Bloodsport. I know the title seems ominous but in reality it's quite campy and fun.
I know about the satirical part of it, but i still think that Robocop is actually an emotional drama desquised as an action movie
Please watch Total recall. Good reaction! Saw this in theatres when I was nine. Snuck in. This one had me shocked. Love it.
the dead pan humour is also a verhoeven trademark. "Thank you for your cooperation…creep!"
The "other" Robocopy falling down the stairs is hilarious too.
Total Recall is even more cheesy but a lot of fun, and probably not quite the violence. and Michael Ironside is in Total Recall as the bad guy (or the henchman anyway) I get those to actors mixed up – Michael ironside, and Kurtwood Smith.
My parents would not let me see Robocop or any other violent R-rated film. To this day I am grateful about that. By the time I saw it as a teen i could get the meta-text and so it has become one of my favorites.
One of the greatest sci-fi action film of all time so underrated
You should watch nightmare in a damaged brain this will make ur head i just hope u are not creamish
Love that you're honest with us and you have your own tastes! 😀
There's definitely a nihilism and cynicism at play in this film and it's sense of humor is black as night. I love this movie for it's layers and treatment of violence and consumerism as part of american culture, but it's definitely not for everyone 😛
My parents were crazy enough to let me watch this when I was 6 and it very quickly became one of my favorite movies of all time and your reactions were so delightful to watch, this was a blast!
👍
During the 1980s, corporate greed was celebrated as personified by the character Gordon Gecko. RoboCop was an answer to that.
The movie is also a hyper-violent retelling of the Jesus story according to Verhoeven. Murphy is reborn to cleanse the sins of Old Detroit and even walks on water at the end, before he casts out the devilish Dick Jones.
Wow she is so beautiful 😍 I swear
I'm a voice guy and wow she's got a nice a voice
watch this movie more than once and wow, 30 years later and its gets better and better
omg… did she say the F word?!😃😊👌
❤️ this movie. My childhood favourite. I have a leg tattoo of Robocop.
300 is a horrible movie. It has so so many historical inaccuracies. Robocop on the other hand is a terrific film, however you MUST keep in mind that it is a SATIRE! Many people fail to recognize that Paul Verhoeven makes satires; he mocks a lot of American culture. In this case he's mocking the action movie genre and just how violent it is.
Checkout the 2 sequels
Robocop, The Crow, and John Wick all contain that violent-revenge formula, a Zorro theme on steroids. Even though I saw Robocop and the Crow before rewatching with you I try to skip movies with this type of content since like you I don't enjoy high enemy violence to set up a hero's revenge. I do like the movie from 1990 called Darkman which has a similar violent villain and hero revenge theme, but I don't think you would if it ever comes up in your polls, so I wouldn't recommend.
Another movie that has this theme is Billy Jack. Biker bullies rough up innocent people and martial artist Billy Jack comes to help, but not without some adversity. Movies like this don't really offer that happy ending or even justice in the end… and to wade through the negative stuff to find that out isn't much fun. I don't like watching movies that get me too mad at the disgusting villains. I watch movies as a fun escape.
I like the 1995 movie Strange Days with Ralph Fiennes, but I also dislike snuff movies and it contains a little of that. A girl friend who met our friends to watch it walked out of the theater when that one scene happened. You may also want to skip Pulp Fiction too because of some disgusting scenes. My mom and I actually walked out of the theater after the Bruce Willis scene. Some guys will disagree with me here ("what a 'beeeep!' It's a classic!!"), but I really didn't like that movie.
I would offer to check with me before you watch another of these themes since I'm a movie buff and I can save you the discomfort, but I may not see it on YT so maybe check IMDB or another non-spoiler source before you watch. Click on "all topics" (upper right) and click the "parents guide" on the list. If it says "severe violence" and a scene description bugs you then maybe skip. Try it on The Crow and Robocop with what you know and see if that IMDB feature may help to pre-screen others. There are some spoilers in this section so use discretion. You could just quickly count the "severe violence" items on the list without reading/spoiling. In violence comparison Robocop has 13 severe and Fellowship contains 13 moderate.
I know you go by votes, but some people's idea of a good movie is not the same as the rest of us.
For an actual fun Zorro theme I recommend Three Amigos (1986), or Zorro the Gay Blade (1981). Looking forward to watching more 80s movies with you!
“Can you fly Bobby?” 🪰🛫🚀✈️🦅🥏🦇🛸🚁🛩️
My dad bought this movie on VHS when i was 5, Murphy's execution and the guy melted by toxic sludge haunted me for a while >.< .
Loved the Robocops ''1st night'' in town tho
I don't understand how it may affect kids. I grew up in the 80's. I've seen this movie for a lot of times now. But it never made me like violence or anything. I grew up like any other person.
The Strategic Defense Initiative, aka "Star Wars" (a nickname coined by Ted Kennedy to poke fun at Ronald Reagan being a notorious Star Wars fan), and artificial hearts were two real technological innovations in the '80s. SDI wasn't a bad idea, it was just too expensive. Israel has an anti-missile laser aperture defense system based on the same anti-nuke concept, but it's ground-based instead of space-based. Anyway, 1987 was a great year for movies. Robocop, Predator, Evil Dead 2, Street Trash, The Brave Little Toaster, A Claymation Christmas Celebration, et cetera. Then in 1988 we got Die Hard and Killer Klowns from Outer Space. And yes, Killer Klowns from Outer Space is a cinematic masterpiece.
2:43 Why does he fasten his top button, though? Cinema Sins is generally right that only dweebs and narcs do that, but Murphy's not a narc. Okay, so he IS a cop, but that's still no excuse to fasten the top button of his shirt.
3:28 "Neat?" Now there's a term that didn't age at all (sarc).
4:34 All those exposed wires! Johnny Five also had that kind of design. I love the '80s aesthetic, but exposed wires is an ergonomic disaster waiting to happen.
5:45 Not technically "murder" in the legal sense. This would be classified as a workplace mishap comparable to negligent manslaughter. But the corporation, since they're basically "the law," wouldn't be held accountable for it.
5:58 Good thing he unloaded that SIG before twirling it like that. The SIG/Sauer P226 is the professional's choice. Agent Mulder used that same model for a time on 'The X-Files'.
6:23 He's intentionally supposed to look like that to convey that he's the type of criminal who might actually be able to outsmart you. Not just a common thug, but a cunning and dangerous tactician.
6:30 Yes! How does that bake yer noodle?! 🙃
7:12 He punched her with a left hook (his left), so she should be facing the other way as she falls.
7:18 "Free enterprise" does NOT imply "stealing." Paul Verhoeven slipping his leftist propaganda in there. Ayn Rand had the more correct view that truly FREE enterprise is distinguished from crony capitalism since monopolies can only be brought into existence through collusion with the state. George Orwell's 'Animal Farm' made a similar point by having the pigs (representing state socialism) and the humans (representing crony capitalism) grow to resemble each other, almost being indistinguishable.
7:20 Unfold that stock, greenhorn! Leaving folding or collapsible stocks in their storage position is such a rookie thing to do, yet movie people do it all the time. In 'On Deadly Ground', Billy Bob Thornton's hapless expendable henchman character asks his buddy if he should leave the stock on his Swedish K "in or out." Anyone who has to ask that doesn't deserve a Swedish K. The Swedish K is for professionals, and professionals use stocks and sights properly. Billy Bob's character decides to leave the stock "in" (folded) because it makes him feel "meaner."
10:46 The Auto-9 was built on a Beretta 93R. It's been homaged multiple times in video games. Two noteworthy examples are the AJM-9 ("AJM" being a reference to "Alex J. Murphy") from Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon and the Torgue Violator from Borderlands.
12:24 He actually has the stock on his Uzi extracted! That always impresses me. Most actors leave it collapsed into its storage position for no reason. Also, that scene was a parody of an actual event.
16:00 Was the Heavy Weapons Guy from Team Fortress 2 referencing that line? Also notice how Emil leaves the stock collapsed on his MAC-10. Definitely unprofessional.
18:58 Popping the color on that M-65 field jacket, sure, but why pop the collar on that shirt? That just looks ridiculous! I always thought popping collars excessively like that was something only movie people did in movies.
19:36 Look how that henchman is holding his pistol! All of them, really! Bad form all around!
21:50 Sounds more like a pig. A mutant toxic waste pig! 🤣
24:53 The Cobra Assault Cannon was built on the Barrett M82. It was homaged in Borderlands as the Torgue Cobra and in Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel as the Hyperion Omni Cannon.
26:16 Emil's toxic waste meltdown was always muh favorite scene when I was an '80s kid in the '80s. Still is, actually. 🤡 Toxic waste was all the rage in the '80s and into the early '90s.
It’s less that they saved him, more like they salvaged him.
Cassie described the ED-209 scene at 1:16 just about perfectly . . .
This might be the most violent and graphic film of 1987. Directors cut even more so
