  1. Percy is a geological scientific explorer. It is not designed to find life on Mars only to analyze and collect rocks it finds interesting. Mars is currently a dead planet, too small and too far from the Sun for life to exist on it"s surface. Mars samples would need to be sent to labs on Earth for scientist to examine the zircon crystal structures like they do now with Mars meteorites found on Earth. The rocks on Mars surface are Three Billon years old and any signs of life would be impossible to accurately detect. We will have to send a Human crew mission with all the resources for life support and scientific discovery for a more detailed survey. The Perseverance sample return purposed mission is a waste of money in my option when we could just pay Space X 10 billion bucks to have a robot bobcat load a ton of Mars rocks onto a starship .

  3. You forgot to mention the fact that if anything in that long complex chain of events goes wrong, they just flushed over $ 10,000,000,000 down the TOILET for some dirt which I would bet a lot of money, will contain no life. That is nuts.

  4. First thought is SpaceX needs o get on it. Getting Starship up and running will change the whole dynamics of what payloads can get to orbit/Moon/Mars/wherever. Much bigger payloads.

    The sample mission return is not a good use of money at the moment. I think the whole game should be based around Starship launching parts into space to make a space only nuclear ship that can travel to wherever with a smaller landing ship or two. I also think we need a base on the Moon to test everything out before we go all in on Mars. Going all in isn't bringing back samples from Mars so 10 billion is way to much for the result we would get.

    I think we could very easily have a Moon base with a space only ship traveling between a space station and the Moon, very easily in the next 10 years. Money has to be directed to the right places and I think SpaceX will succeed on Starship which would be very useful to all that.

  5. Life from Mars, if it exists, may very well not be designed to interact with life on Earth. However, it may be able to out-compete for crucial biological materials or other resources. Or it could exploit environmental niches on Earth that are currently not efficiently occupied, creating waste products that have effects downstream. Personally I don't think it will, but I'd hate to be wrong.

  6. Did NASA consider loading the samples into a helium balloon? Could the helium ballon rise into Mars' upper atmosphere? In this case it might be captured by an orbiter and returned to earth rather than designing an additional, expensive and complex Lander & Re-launch vehicle?? Just wondering.

I had an amazing chanse encounter with a guy from JPL, who was the dude in charge of this VERY mission! There are no tech barriers herek, it is simply a mattter of funding. This sample return mission has ben planned since Perseverence was concieved!

  9. For me, the most frustrating aspect is the fact these missions are so incredibly expensive is because they need to reinvent the wheel for every mission. Extremely low payload capacity is the issue, requiring each and every mission to be made up of bespoke components specifically designed to be as small as possible (yet contain a complete scientific experiment), to be as light as possible (yet provide shielding against radiation), and so on.
    That entire system of building missions needs to be put down. No more special space-grade scientific components. No more specially-built solid motors for probes. No more tiny instruments.
    Book a Starship! All these missions are ten years out anyways! Starship would give these missions 150 tons of regular payload to Mars.
    Just order standard-sized laboratory equipment from regular suppliers, add a pressurized hull, a frame and some overbuilt parachutes, add a robot arm in the middle of the lab to interact with the equipment, put on some lead shielding, and send two of 'em just for good measure. Would be cheaper than whatever highly-specific stuff they're developing, and allow entire laboratories to be send to anywhere in the Solar system.
    The reason I'm so nonchalant about it is because that's the approach we should have once we can send 150 tons into LEO for the price of a Falcon launch. Less price to pay for failure = less stringent approach yet more stuff done overall. We need to change our mindsets to a post-Starship era (as these scientific missions will all be carried out 10 years+ anyways).

  10. Within nasa incompetence/treason 10bn doesn't sound like a lot to me. JWST is said to cost 10bn and that's just a mirror a million km away. Not 100million km out and back. But of course 10bn early budget could mean 40bn in reality. All pretty moot in the face of UFO disclosure however which would seem to be imminent.

  11. ummm what happened to the asteroid sample that returned to earth 2 months ago?…imagine what we could do if we gave all that NASA money to Space X…NASA has been through 100s of billions of taxpayer dollars…lots of scientists have lived very good lives and had very good retirements on our dollar with very little to show for it…i guess when you hire Nazi war criminals to run your space program you should expect lies deception and theft

  12. One of my closest friends is in charge of the engineering team for the Mars Ascent Vehicle at NASA in Huntsville. I’ll just keep my mouth shut to him since he has no authority over cancelling it lol.

  13. While the idea of a Mars sample return is exciting, I agree this mission is overly complex and far too expensive. I’d rather see that money spread out over more missions to the outer solar system.. especially Jupiter & Saturn’s moons.. and ESPECIALLY Titan. Neptune and Triton could also use more love.

  14. We did it already with two humans. This is just a bag of rocks. Not easy but you don't have to land close, the choppers have a great range just kamikaze them into a big funnel no accuracy needed disposable choppers.

  15. NASA has NOT WANTED to find life on Mars ever since the Viking missions. It's obvious that they've devoted every mission to investigating dirt and rocks and that's about it. That way they've assured the perpetuation of an ongoing budget. Additionally, if the life discoveries of the Viking missions were accepted it could significantly impact all future missions under the concern of interfering with existing life.

  16. Many disciplines are going to be needed on the moon and Mars, then your going to need many different types of rovers. Therefore, if they are serious about commercial inclusion for spaceflight then you need involvement in various experimental equipment for and from each discipline to see what happens and what's needed. NASA's focus on just life is ridiculous. If they buy into the big bang fairytale, all the elements are everywhere, some more concentrated in one place than another.

  17. The one thing NASA and Congress is good at is cancelling projects after they are started.
    Once a plan is made and start , you follow through even if it’s a lackluster plan.
    You can adjust it but you still go through with the planned parameters.
    I didn’t like the idea of rover dropping containers on the ground for a follow up mission to do a treasure hunt.
    Why not leave them in a pile at a couple locations or have the rovers carry the sample and meet up with a return vehicle to offload its samples?
    Better, have NASA give out a bounty for every container sample return.
    This will motivate the private sector to start working on a solution.

  18. Now mars sample return is technically complicated. Many many literal moving parts. But its also so … small minded. Frankly timid. Its another example of how government space programs have lost their MOXI (get it?). Also, Im a Bioengineering PhD student. If you are scared of life on mars then you should be running for a bubble! RUN. The Microbes in your gut, in your food, IN YOUR SOAP! Their coming for you! RUN!!!

  19. if the locations for the samples were good, I think it’s probably one of the most important things to get back to study. If for no other reason then to catalog. The period of time of 10 or so years is perfectly fine in my opinion. Could very well be one of the best options is to have the landing crew that eventually will get to Mars pick up the samples and study it.

    I am getting tired of Congress being wishy-washy about science and not quite understanding it’s what helps make us make money. Just like they are with education in general

  20. NASA is a government agency. Like all government agencies they want unlimited funding. That’s why they want big budget programs that run for decades .

    Remind me please… wasn’t NASA selling the idea of putting men on Mars in something like the late 2020’s or 2030’s. And Trump basically said let’s do it. Then NASA dialed back their talk and pushed the hopeful time line out much further…NASA should not be trusted….they are only chasing money…

  21. I agree. It ain’t worth a shot. And it’s just a shot, a chance at it. It’s so complicated there’s a high probability that something will go wrong.
    $10B for a chance at it? Too damn expensive. Use the money elsewhere!

  22. The original experiment was poorly designed. Lets say mars is brimming with life – but we dont conclusively find life then we have to launch a better mission with more locations and deeper sampling in smarter places. And if there is life then were gonna want more and bettter missions. Using moores law we will get more and better paylaods to mars over time without the complexity of return missions. Im all for a large orbiter dropping dozens of independent missions by different countries to the surface using existing oroven landing techniqies.

  23. Great Video ! Met and talked to Robert Zubrin a couple of times a long time ageo … His proposal "Moon direct" (do a computer search) has some very good ideas for the return to the moon. His LEV (HLS) can also support the NASA designed "24-Hour Lunar Shuttle" (LEO to LLO) by Stanley Borowski (NASA Glenn Research Center). The engines for the "Lunar Shuttle" can take US from the deep gravity well of LEO to Mars and beyond. tjl
