I had to go back into the bowels of hell, aka Death Valley in July, to resupply and take care of a few things before heading back out again on my next expedition. I decided to take the scenic route, along U.S. 395…and thus traveled the entire length and breadth of Inyo County, marveling at its vastness and astonishingly diverse (and scenic) topography. Complains about $6 gas and then sets the cruise control on 85mph in a jacked up box on wheels. You'll notice that the estimated driving range dropped by 9 miles in the first 5 miles of driving because of that. Used 101 miles of range up in the 69 mile span where the dashboard was shown. And I bet that the estimated range was itself based upon previous fast/wasteful driving.
Using 3/8 of the 4Runner's tank to go 69 miles is crazy, especially with it being DOWNHILL to Death Valley, and through pretty thin air due to the high temperature. That implies a total actual range of 184 miles (versus the original display estimate of 313 miles, which is already pretty bad) on a 23 gallon tank, so exactly 8mpg. Pretty gross, even if oversize tires might give an odometer error making the actual distance farther and the mpg a few percent better. But that would also mean that the actual speed was even higher, too.
Mechanical wear on a vehicle's engine/trans/drivetrain/tires is directly proportional to the amount of gas burned, and for some things, proportional to the square of the speed. She's lighting money on fire by not driving at a leisurely pace.
Man…i wish I could find a new group of friends to go with to the desert more often. Here in L.A. life got boring with everybody getting older and more sedentary.

I met a young man whose father was a Ranger in Death Valley. The school bus would take him daily to the High School at Shoshone. Said he was planning to attend a college in Minn. as I recall.
