Riding on a Soviet-era tram takes life a step back towards normal in east Ukraine

Built in the 1980s, the Soviet-era streetcars in eastern Ukraine’s Saltivka may look rickety as they rattle past damaged buildings, but for local people, they represent a step back towards something like normal life away from bombardment.

On Feb. 27, three days after the Russia-Ukraine conflict began, the trams’ electrical power station in the city was destroyed, as was their depot shortly after.

Of Saltivka’s roughly 160 trams, 60 were destroyed, another 60 damaged. And the remaining 40 are now returning to service after Ukrainian forces retook the area around the country’s second-largest city in May.

For some residents, travel time has been greatly cut, which brought convenience to them. And for some others, taking a ride on trams is of joyness.

  1. Both Scorpions and Rolling Stones are giving concerts where you can clearly see that they love Ukraine and are against the Russian efforts to make it Russia. Also a famous Serbian tennis player had now ukrainien colours and this is surprising because for the most Serbien people are supporting the EVIL Russia. Ukraine took some revenge for the killing in Vinytsia today when they destroyed an armybase in Christyakove, Donetsk region. Ukraine also destroyed an blow up an ammunition and weapon depot in Skargovka, Luhansk region. We have now 144 days of the war and Shougi demand forces to destroy more. What a happy people the russian must be with such leaders.

  2. I (barely) heard from here that Putin initiated some patriotic programs in the Russian schools. An excellent move. But over here they are making it sound like some kind of personality cultism in the making…
But I confidently assert that Putin is probably trying to intercept the well-known sinusoidal nature of societies, and of democracy in particular. I will wager he is trying to lengthen the leading-edge of the wavelength of this unfortunate human tendency…
Believers should see this as true and very deep patriotism, and not something less!
But if we refuse the ancient philosopher's wisdom to "know ourselves", we will not understand Putin…
By the mystery of masculine nature, which has to do with a certain order, this Putin has sensed, whether or not he knows the following mystery, that we are well along the original trajectory of Eve, and because we have waxed dull, like Eve we too must learn the lesson.
But we shan't say more, saving that at the level of the striving of the nations the very spirits above are set in motion, with the spirits of men of strong desire, and like a magnetic influence upon iron filings they move the spirits of men and nations. And they judge them. It was so from the beginning…
    Be ye warned.

  3. Yet China get's upset when people call Taiwan a separate nation… This situation is so hypocritical of China! It's insulting to Russia and the civilians. It is not 'Eastern Ukraine' it's Donetsk People's Republic & Luhansk People's Republic. Stop calling it 'Ukraine'.

This night Ukraine striked a russian military depot in Crimnea, the city is Lazurne. Russia has the last days killed houndreds of civilians in Ukraine. What a happy country Russia must be, go to a war 2022 they cannot finish.

  5. In many countries now they have light shows in yellow and blue. And rock bands such as Scorpions and Rolling stones have ukrainien symbols. There are also rallies to support Ukraine. The russian fascist cannot be in the world championship and the russian people dont know there are world championship just now in free athletics. Russia has criminal leaders and a very bad media there only one truth is acceptable. I forget to tell you that Latvia just now is taking away everything who is russian. Can you believe that Russia the year 2022 started a war in Europe? A criminal country think they have the right to own its neighbors.

  6. Rammstein keybordist Christian Lorentz raised the ukrainien flag in a concert at Warsaw Poland. People were very happy. Everwhere we have ukrainien flags and everwhere are with us. It is a big movement against the russian fascists who invaded.
