Richard Marles 'hasn't delivered anything' in defence

The Australian’s Foreign Editor Greg Sheridan says Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles “hasn’t delivered anything” in defence.

Mr Sheridan’s remarks come after he suggested in his column on Tuesday that AUKUS might never materialise.

“It’s very simple, any nation in history which has gone down the nuclear submarine route has to spend a lot more money – they’re very expensive,” Mr Sheridan told Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell.

“If you don’t spend that money, but you keep your defence budget constant, you end up cannibalising all your other capabilities.

“We are wasting $50 billion a year to produce virtually no significant military capabilities.”

  1. Labor may not kill off AUKUS directly, though many in the party want it to fail. They know it is largely popular in the electorate, so they will just starve Defence of funds and let it wither on the vine.

  2. As soon as that twit Stephen Smith was appointed to head up our strategic review I knew we were in trouble. How do these people sleep at night, knowing they are so inept? Surely their partners whisper in their ears "maybe it's time to spend more time with your family"

  4. The 3 AWD's by themselves are way more capable then any fleet we have had ever. Each Hobart has 48 VLS cells and this is the equivalent to the entire former Adelaide class fleet. They have a radar system well beyond anything we previously had and they are being upgraded to the latest version of that system. We still have 8 x Anzacs which are way more capable now then they were 10 years ago with there ceafar radars. The Hobarts also carry 8 harpoons and eventually will get the NSM launchers as well. The Hunters will be a great upgrade over the Anzacs and will most likely have 48 VLS cells instead of only 32 on the british version of the ship. So it is a lie that we are not as capable now as we were back when.

  5. If AUKUS falls over soon after Albanese's China visit our long term future will involve kissing some serious CCP ass! Even Ukraine's donations of military equipment are coming straight out of the defence budget Marles gives me nothing but Baghdad Bob vibes and that guy was happy to calmly maintain Iraq was being successfully defended against "Shock and Awe" while Abrams tanks were just a few hundred meters away from him!

  6. The PM of PR & BS, leads, loosely speaking, a collective of misfits in this Labor/Greens-Teals disaster for our country, no surprise here, ask Indigenous Minister of disaster what has been achieved in 18 months in that portfolio, same as Defence, experts in achieving nothing about anything, fronting up with the taxpayer funded script writers A4's for any given day thinking the Australian taxpayer & voter still believes the "Plan". AUKUS, another unfolding story of fiction, don't forget RUDD was sent to look after our interests. AUSTRALIA IS WAKING UP…

  7. Militant Australian Nazi. Absolutely crazy calls. The ratio of the forces of the AU army on the territory of the AC including US military personnel against BRICS is approximately 1 to 10,000. In any scenario of an attack on China from the US bases around China, the AU must and will be destroyed.
