Richard Marles has realised the Australian Navy is ‘broken’

Strategic Analysis Australia Michael Shoebridge says Richard Marles has realised the Australian Navy is “broken”.

The federal government has handed down its review of the Australian naval fleet, which shows it will increase from 11 ships, all the way to 20.

The new surface fleet strategy will cost $11.1 billion over a decade.

Mr Shoebridge told Sky News host Chris Kenny that “nothing is going to happen fast”.

“The implementation is underdone, and it isn’t any faster than the failing old plan.”

  1. Only the navy? Look at this grub in the thumbnail… Being a public figure one should at least shave and look presentable. And he's in charge of defense? Yeah, Au is fast going to hell in a hand basket.

  3. The navy had problems long before this government took over and the previous government had 9yrs to help fix the problem but instead they wasted a huge amount of the defence budget on the French submarine deal which ultimately went tits up but still cost us a huge amount of money for nothing
That’s the trouble with the Murdoch media empire they are hypocrites who never look at both sides of a story

  5. Useless to the left, almost as useless to the right. Both Labor and the LNP have got us to this very position. Expect massive cost blowouts, half of whats needed delivered very slowly, whilst trying repopulate the armed services with diversity hire because a third of all Australians won't even acknowledge Australia Day. Got to wonder what type of flags these tubs will eventually fly.

  6. Marles, Albo and Chalmers still not doing sfa after 2 reviews and 2 years. 3 incompetent lefty d-heads all milking a big Taxpayer funded paycheque and delivering nothing but lefty wank.
Another back ended deal for funding by Albanese…..so in reality….nothing getting done for another decade.

  7. Minsucule military marles – will be off playing with his golf stick in the bath tub. As just another lying politician. Who has done nothing. We are losing navy ships – between now and when these new ships – are supposed to be built. You have no guarantee they will build these ships. This is all ten years away. And of course labor would then have a review – and say it can't build them – when the time arrives.

Labor just love making fools of everyone. Who else would get away with this much incompetence – and the left wing media love them. This is nothing more then labor lies – is just another day in labors mind in political paradise. They lie – and no-one does a thing about it.

When does the liberals realise – go get someone like – the Canadian opposition leader Pierre Poilievre – who knows how to talk to the media. And has the whit – and mind to destroy idiots like labor in one sentence. Go get an opposition leader – with some speaking talent.

The liberals – are still talking about John Howard. Mate – he left the building years ago. And you guys have been a joke since then.

  8. Fancy paying some retired American Naval Officer millions to tell us what we need. Then come up with some fantasy land OCVs and smaller frigates.
FFS, the Hunter class should be sorted in another 12 months, build all 9 and include the increased VLS capacity.
It’s not about how many frikken ships ya have, it’s about how many missiles they carry.
Imagine the navy trying to manage maintenance and spares if we have Hunter class and then some other smaller Frigate built by an overseas company.
    Stupidly

  9. Labour hasn't even been in power fo 2 years so they have inherited the coalitions failure to adequately plan and fund the navy when they had responsibility.
Coalition are effectively highlighting their own failures when in government.
Isn't m9rrison about to take up a well paid position with the retired US general who talked m9rrison into the 360 billion submarine deal.
Can anyone see a potential conflict of interest here?

  10. FFS. Australia is broken not just the navy thanks to career politicians. We badly need someone as PM that knows how to run a huge company. Not parasites that are there for the pay & the effing obscene pension the parasites get.

  11. Thanks you liberal & labor voters , you’ve really ran Australia into the ground !
Scrape the whole defence plan , it’s outdated & obsolete before it began.
Multiple layered missile defence systems to buy time then build next generation navy !

  12. Good news but to slow .

Australia borrowed for the pandemic & Australia capability to defend itself is equally as important.
So borrowing a a trillion is ok

We can cut back on politician perks to recover the cost of repayments .

Forget letting the Australian decision makers to select the design.
Let's be honest Australian decision maker didn't do a great job in the past .i use the Collins class submarines as example .

My thoughts are if you want what Australia needs why not just ask the US to build it all for us we Would have the entire order within 4 years of contract being signed..

THE US ARE MORE EQUIPPED TO BUILD THEM IN A QUICKER TIME FRAME & THEY HAVE THE BEST OF EVERYTHING WE NEED .

IT JYST MAKES SENSE IF MORE TIME WAS AVAILABLE TO WAIST THEN GETTING THEM BUILLT IN AUSTRALIA WOULD BE AWESOME.

UNFORTUNATELY WE DON'T HAVE TIME TO WAIST

  13. Armee, Navee, Airforce, Mareen's, Spaceforce. In a time when a Space HughFO tech can go to le Ocean's bottom and le Moon with 1 vehicle. Why would we waist mooney on obsolete 1800-1900's heavee slow metalic ship's and sub's?

  14. Australia has enjoyed generations of prosperity so where is the defence capability to show for all this wealth?

Governments in this country on both sides of politics are elected and then promise all sorts of outcomes, only to do nothing while they serve out their time in office before passing the problem on to the next government who then repeat the same process. Labour sat on the submarine question when they were last in office for six years and did nothing before passing it on to the Coalition government who then lost another nine years. That is why we won't have any submarines to replace the Collins class until the 2040’s.

Words mean nothing, anyone can say words. What matters in the end is real military capability which is why China is busily arming itself today. We have been badly served by both sides of politics in this country.

  15. Not to worry, the Captains, Commodores and Admirals will still be lining up for the gongs and promotions they so richly do not deserve, as they go through the rigmarole of ship selection and its equipment. All this of course will blow that 65 Million budget into triple digits with no problem at all through the absolute incompetence of the dills in Government and the Senior Officers of the ADF.
