Richard Marles admits AUKUS partners need to expand industrial bases to meet targets

Defence Minister Richard Marles has admitted Australia will need to see both the US and the UK expand their industrial bases for AUKUS targets to be met.

“A year ago, we made the point that we will need to see an expansion of the industrial base, both in the US and the UK,” Mr Marles told Sky News Australia.

“For the UK specifically, because the nuclear reactors will be built in Britain, not here … that facility which is operated by Rolls Royce in Derby needs to be expanded to produce those reactors at a faster rate.

“I was actually there last year and they were already readying themselves to build the Australian reactors there.

“Indeed, there are parts being made right now as we speak.”

  3. Economies that rely on military expenditure to provide sufficient GDP & local employment, are unable to tolerate peace.
How can a nation ban the peaceful use of a sustainable energy source but encourage a WMD. The hypocrisy continues unabated.

  5. I remember Hawk telling us we were shifting from an industrial economy to a service economy, which meant that government wasnt going to support or structure an industrial base anymore.
    Ditto.
So now we have to do a Monica Lewinsky on any industrial country for our manufacturing.
    Well done boofheads
