Review: Karel Ancerl's Complete Philips and DG Recordings

Eloquence has done it again–another smart collection, this time devoted to Karel Ancerl’s 1950s (and early 60s) recordings for Philips and DG with the Czech Philharmonic and the Vienna Symphony. You get 9 CDs containing music by Tchaikovsky, Dvořák, Smetana, Stravinsky, Brahms and Shostakovich, with a little bonus by Prokofiev.

  1. I don't think anyone has bettered Ancerl's Dvorak requiem. Sound could be better but I'm not complaining because it's a really great performance.
Now going to look up the Shostakovich.

  2. You should make a video on listening habits. Tips for how to clear ones schedule for listening. I allways wonder whenever I could find the time to get to listen to all this music 😂

  3. I wondered when you were going to do this – I will download the Dvorak next weekend. Can you please (pretty please) review the new Bocelli Otello? Maybe as part of the least important recording projects (and I know that project is artist based) EVER?

  4. It's high time Supraphon produced a nice big box of the recordings he made for the label. I had many of these on LP in the day and I so wished that I had not sold them in the rush to build a cd library. Always very well recorded and fabulously played.

  5. I always thought his best work was on Supraphon. They are best at capturing the atmosphere of the Czech Philharmonic in its home base, the Rudolphinum. So many records are available new and second hand. Great area for collecting.
