Lutoslawski regarded her as a accomplished composer, and she actually is. Her piano quintets for instance are amazing. She has a witty style; her second piano sonata is a bold and energetic piece. Krystian Zimerman recorded it for DG. Absolutely worthwhile. I am looking forward to this series of orchestral works.
Six (out of seven) of her violin concertos were also recorded by Chandos, and they show how her musical language developed throughout her career. Her string quartet cycle has also some great stuff (also recorded by Chandos). There's actually more recorded material, anyway it's good to see Bacewicz is getting growing attention – her music certainly deserves it!
Thanks for this review! Obviously I would love to hear you "splitting hairs" comparison review, but I got your point. I hope we will hear both cycles concluded in few years and your analysis after that. Meanwhile I will check by myself which one I like more. Cheers!
I've listened to this three times in the past week. What a magnificent find! One of my discs of the year. Let's hope this doesn't stall out, like Chandos's Ruth Gipps series, which is also excellent.
Another reason to be grateful for this channel. Ashamed to say I had never listened to her works, but I will be digging into this release today. Thank you, as always.
Now that adblock doesn't work on Youtube, Youtube wants me to watch a 2-minute ad, then a 40-second ad and yet another 30-second ad BEFORE I can even watch a 5-minute Dave video. I keep refreshing the page to bypass this, but it is absurd and overreaching by the platform, and I'll have to find some circumvention method for this.
Wow, Dave, I have difficulty keeping up with all the tempting but unfamiliar composers or works, which you highlight in your videos. The problem lies not so much getting the CDs but in finding time to listen too them sufficiently often to appreciate them fully. For example, I only just listened for the first time to Sancta Susanna, the Chandos CD of which I bought some months ago; I was already blown away. There are many others like that in the listening queue. Keep it going, though. I am already searching for records of Bacewicz.
How silly this is basically the same program put out by cpo just one year ago and also starting a series of complete orchestral works. Why do these labels make a point of fighting over the same cake when it's already hard enough to sell anything in the first place? The cpo CD is with Łukasz Borowicz who conducted the violin concertos on… Chandos.
Thanks Dave. From what I’ve heard of her, she’s really an excellent composer, so I’ll have to check out. Two series at once? I say that’s great, catalog owes it to her to make up for lost time. Absent other information, I can only assume that prior neglect had to do with her gender as opposed to more lofty considerations of value.

I like her very much, not only because she was from Poland 🙂
