Restoration of 1948 Chevy Fleetmaster Gauges – Test & Refinish



In this video we will completely disassemble the gauge cluster out of the ’48 Fleetmaster project car.
The fuel gauge is loose a rattling around in the body of the gauge so we will need to re-solder that as well.
We will test all of the gauges to make sure they will work.
The face plate and bezel are completely rusty and crusty so we will need to deal with that as well.

  1. Well done. I’m like you, there’s no way I’d get away from the factory gauges on my β€˜51 truck. Our forefathers at GM designed a perfect gauge cluster in these β€˜47-β€˜54 cars and trucks. I remember driving mine at night back in the day and finding the soft glow from those 6V dash lights so dang mesmerizing. I spent less than $30 on decals and paint on mine and I’m very pleased with the result. Yours look awesome!

  2. enjoyed the video. I'm not sure what my gauges will need, haven't looked at them for a while. When I get to them I'm sure I will revisit this episode. Thanks again for your time, instruction & willingness to let us tag along on your repairs, etc. I have a kerosene heater in my garage to help with some warmth but haven't used it for drying paint, thanks for the idea.   3. Be glad you did not have that cup in your lap :0) Question .. is that gauge set the same in a 50 Panel Van. The reason I ask my first school bus at 5 was a 50 Panel Van all black no windows and only wooden benches to sit on two facing one another. Had to climb in thru the passenger door and exit. Tig weld the tiny holes and hand file them smooth in the cluster panel. I've seen people also sit something on a brass block and gas weld but this thin panel would require a good tig weld that won't distort the metal. They look great and NEW !.. After watching this I remember the 1960 Buick having a reversed speedometer. One of my grade school teachers bought a baby blue Buick that had that speedometer.

I believe a better explanation of your method used for calibration should be given like the use of a K type Thermocouple (yellow Jack) might save someone from connecting the gauge directly to a voltage source. AMP meter current (milliamps) with a decent multimeter depending on the shunt used. Fixed resisters for the fuel gauge like Two 4.7 ohm resisters in series and so on. Air vs oil is probably good enough for your oil pressure application.
