They should no longer be referred to as barrier islands. They are not a barrier. All the mangroves are gone, and they have been overbuilt. They are no longer a barrier unless you count human beings and their belongings as a barrier.
They are going to be rebuilding and rebuilding again and again because they live in a flood zone and hurricanes are getting worse. They shouldn’t build on barrier islands.
In the future only the very wealthy will be able to live on the barrier islands because insurance will be so high nobody else will have the means to afford it.
Not to worry all those people who are “forced” to live near the gorgeous warm sandy beaches with lovely sunsets will get bailed out again and again by our tax dollars, government handouts and cash donations from dummy’s up north. They don’t have a thing to worry about.
The Speedway quickly pictured in the video… is it across from a large public beach access parking lot? The next building to the left of the Speedway is where we just stayed through AirBnB. 😢 Is it still there? We loved it, and loved our first time vacationing within your community, Madeira Beach. I would love to come help the clean up effort but am now back in school and I live in Southern Indiana. Godspeed to those of you who lost so much, especially loved ones, for they cannot be replaced. 😢 Heartbreaking to see. I will be praying for you and all the communities affected by Helene. The Hoosier State is thinking about you!! ❤

BIDEN JUST APPROVED $1 BILLION IN EMERGENCY RELIEF FUNDS TO FLORIDA ON THE DAY THE HURRICANE HIT. TRUMP STATED HE WOULD WITHHOLD RELIEF FUNDS FOR CALIFORNIA WILD FIRES BECAUSE HE DOESN'T LIKE GOVERNOR NEWSOM. As an independent, this matters to me.
This is one of the reasons why I left Tampa Bay after living in Florida for 27 years. Now I watch hurricanes from the safety of my living room. Sorry, but it just ain’t worth it.
The Tampa Bay region has dodged bullet, after bullet, after bullet for 103 years since the last damaging hurricane! The year 1921 was the last time a major hurricane impacted Tampa Bay to this magnitude. For 103 years the Bay Area has dodged dozens of hurricanes. Well now the lucky streak is over, and the bill has come due!
As a pinellas local for 32 years ive never in my life seen anything like this here and it's heart breaking to see our communities like this except for on the news for other counties in florida but we haven't seen anything like this since 1921 and this devastating prayers for all of in Tampa bay areas and anywhere else that got this strom stay positive and stay strong we will be ok we can always replace items and houses but not lifes
Anyone that would want to re build needs to know that their property will be denied for new insurance or would have to pay over $30K of insurance a year.

My mom was at one of those condos when the storm hit. I'm grateful she's okay. Also glad to hear that Jasper the cat is okay. It's shocking to see the destruction to such a beautiful place!
