Rescuing a juvenile flying-fox on the ground; this is Duffy

Duffy is a juvenile male Grey-Headed Flying-Fox who was found on the ground in a car park and rescued by a lovely MOP; he bundled him up in a jacket and managed to get the little guy safely into a box.
It took me quite a while to collect the little guy because I was at my Mum’s nursing home when the call came in, and nobody was able to do it straight away, then the rescue for Gladys popped in and it was on the way, so it was nearly 2 hours before I got to little Duffy.

I really didn’t think he had much of a chance for survival when I first saw him given that he was crying in a very cerebral way (head injuries often have a particular cry)… I was not only surprised to find him alive when I got home, but alive a few hours later and apparently improving. I hate it when bats make a liar of my predictions…

I don’t know how he’s going to do but I’m feeling much more hopeful than when I rescued him.

Tolga Bat Hospital takes donations for our batties. Tolga is an awesome place in Far North Queensland, which has charity status. By sending donations to them, they get a percentage (and deserve every cent) and they can allocate money to me for batty expenses without it becoming part of my income stream (which makes tax time difficult).

Mention Megabattie or Meg in the PayPal message box and the money will find its way to me.
If no message box appears, please email Jenny to tell her that the money is for me.
IMPORTANT: If you pay through the PayPal Giving Fund, can you please email Jenny with the AMOUNT DONATED and the name under which you have donated, OR just forward along the PP receipt.
The Giving Fund doesn’t charge any fees (so the bats get more money) but PP doesn’t itemise out the amount, they just send a total every month, and we don’t know if the money is for Tolga or for Megabattie.

  1. Poor little darling 😞 But 50/50 is far better odds than if wee Duffy had just laid on the ground. What a sweet MOP for rescuing him and calling for help! Interesting that he has a cerebral injury cry. My little brain damaged cat has a different meow, too, come to think of it – a very short high-pitched "mee". It's just one of her many unique quirks. Hang in there, Duffy and make my day by being a survivor!

  2. Poor little Duffy. Good to see his dear little feet on the edge of the cardboard box so he was hanging.
Such a good MOP for rescuing him. ❀
Hope Duffy continues to improve; whatever happens, we know he is in good hands, Meg. β€πŸ¦‡πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦

  3. When the hurt Batties make that certain "My head has hurts…owee, oweee…" cry that really tugs at my heart 😒. Thanks for your care and bravery with these beautiful Batties ❀

  4. If you didn't live in Austrailia I would send you one of my extra Tezituor plush bats. So your rescuee's could cuddle one of their own instead of a bear.. (Nothing against the land of Aus, but postage is a bit expensive..).

  5. That cry is so painful to hear, but it's comforting to know you're still doing what you can to help them recover. If ever there were a good time for a bat to make a liar out of you, it'd be when they're in as pitiful a state as he is. Get well young Duffy! And your friend Gladys, too!

  6. Go little Duffy surviving so far! Do you ever use DMSO for the closed head/TBI/concussions on batties? Fingers crossed for him, those cries are heartstring tugging. Glady's looking at you like, "Escape? Not me…I would NEVER!" lol Sweet innocent little face.

  7. Meg, your gentle voice, even if unfamiliar to their ears, is soothing… and letting them know they are being cared for. Duffy, we know you are hurting, but you are in the best of care.. Hoping this little guy can pull through.
