Repair Bail Arm BROKEN Into 3 Pieces | Part 2 | CAT 637 Scraper



This is Part 2 of repairing an earthmoving part that is completely broken into 3 pieces! This is a Bail Arm off a twin drive push-pull Caterpillar 637 Scraper. The bail arm is used to hook up one scraper to another one in front of it so they can assist each other with taking big cuts. This bail arm has a lot of damage, both ends have broken off and one of the ends is bent. In this Part 2 video we complete the repair and show the step by step process of reassembling and welding the hollow bars, sleeves and stop plates to the bail arm. We also use our Sir Meccanica WS2 line boring machine to repair the bushing position. The repair is completed by griding down the welds and painting the entire bail arm with primer and CAT yellow paint.

  1. Quick rough calculations say even if you heated the entire thing cherry hot the air pressure would never got above 300 kPa or 50 psi so I think you are safe from it blowing up. Maybe on your first pass the air might have messed with your weld puddle but now that thing will spend its life under a vacuum.

  2. How about filling the hollow bar with something to reduce the amount of air inside before sealing it off? Maybe a styrofoam rod. That way there would be less air to expand when the hollow bar is heated for full welding.

  3. theres probaly only a handfull of people in the world could do the craft you do you really need to be on the pay chanel this is pure gold the way you display your editing is spot on you are a master of your craft nobody would even think for a second on their best day consider to tackle these insane jobs you take and make them look like childs play i dont know what their paying you but i can tell you its not enough lol great job truly a legend

  5. Not only Impressive work, but some serious craftsman skills you got there. I’ve only been welding (home & hobby) a couple of years and was impressed with myself for making a new fire grill for my worn out bbq pit. It didn’t look the best but it worked. After viewing your skills i am humbled. Great video, thanks!

  6. 36:25 – I call those fusable links, as they serve the same purpose as a fuse. As you said, it's usually a smart move to design in a 'weak' point that's relatively easy to repair rather than have some other point fail that is more expensive and/or difficult to repair.

I love these videos they really are good only thing I wish you would do is at the end of it I wish you would say like how many hours you’ve spent on it I know it’s edited down to 40 minutes and this case you have two videos but overall including all the prep work everything how many hours do you have in this job awesome video mate keep up the good work

  9. I love this. A person who believes in giving their customers superior quality and and elevated level of service. I run a small metal fabrication business here in Georgia and it’s satisfying to know, from the outtakes at least, that a universal language is spoken in our community. After studying your methods, I was emboldened to take on my first excavator bucket repair after 17 years of welding stairs and lighter materials. I did it like I thought you might and it came out beautifully! Thanks for sharing these processes and projects with all of us. And for the outtakes. Don’t edit those. We need that.

  11. Have you thought of taking on an apprentice to pass your knowledge on and also do the mundane jobs like painting the repaired parts. It was lucky you had that bail arm jig lying around.

  12. If the air inside the hallow bar starts at 1 atmosphere at 25 deg C, bringing the air temperature up to 1540 deg C will only increase the pressure to just over 6.6 atmosphere (97 psi).
    Doesn't seem that dangerous. Not with steel that thick.
