Renovating a homestead in Portugal

We have been busy lately with a lot of little odd jobs around the homestead. We finally have our tools now and are ready to move forward with some of the bigger tasks, but we have a small problem:

Would you rebuild the roof with wood or steel? Let us know what you would do and why in a comment below!

Some tools we bought:

  1. For windows, they sell a plastics (window insulator kit) specifically for windows, in comes with a sticky band you put around the window, then put the plastic over it, then use a hair dryer to heat the plastic to stretch it into a perfect surface. Very cheap, beautiful, still can see the sun, keep bugs and cold outside. If your stores don't have them, Amazon got it under Window Insulator Kit name.

  2. We were horrified to hear a report on the Irish news a couple of weeks ago about 'the start of spider season', which apparently is a period of about 6 weeks when the outdoor spiders move indoors to see out the winter and to hatch their eggs next spring. NO ONE WARNED US THERE WOULD BE AN ACTUAL SPIDER SEASON. After a couple of unwelcome encounters, we quickly got a set of plug-in ultrasound spider repellents from Amazon, and so far so good.

  5. Hello. As a Portuguese construction technician for 40 years, I can tell you that the choice of roof depends only on the money you have available. The roof is one of the most expensive parts of a house to build due to the already high cost of labor. Don't try to build a roof yourself because you won't be able to do it, as I've seen that it's just DIY. The choice between wood and metal is also obvious. Metal is much cheaper than wood but it also requires some attention regarding rust. Now, the sandwich panel is used, which already has thermal insulation, but it is terrible and scares the residents due to the "cracks" caused by temperature variations. Wash the tiles well with a pressure washer to take advantage of the rainwater. Good luck!

  6. Nice work, both of you. You house is getting better by the day! I'm curious, will you try to grow chinese brocoli, you cai, baicai, etc. to cook chinese food too or you've put a hold on asian food or totally turned the page on this?

  7. Love watching you two but I do notice that you say I a lot as if you are making all the decisions and she doesn't count. You are both in this together so WE would sound so much better. Looking forward to seeing what you both decide to do with the bathroom.
