The greatest all around player ever!!!
May 30th, 1964, what an "Amazing" day for me. My mother worked with someone who knew Willie and he invited me to come see him at Shea Stadium. His name was Blanco Chatang(Please forgive the spelling, he was involved with Cuban Baseball). I saw all the great Giants–Marichal-McCovey-Cepeda et al. Then I saw Willie. I was 14 yos and had idolized this man for as long as I remember breathing. When I actually met him, I was shaking. He was so nice and took the time to talk and pose for several photos. I had the pleasure of meeting 2 other times in the 1990s, but nothing will ever compare to that Saturday in Flushing. Thank You Willie, I wouldn't trade my childhood for anything in the world and you were such a major part of it. I LOVED and STILL LOVE WILLIE MAYS!
IMO, the GOAT non pitcher. …would have given it to Griffey if his injuries didn't derail him. …would have given it to Bonds if he didn't juice.
Wished I owned his Rookie. Old times everywhere are having heart attacks trying to find it.
⚾♥
My opinion Willie was the greatest all around outfielder every to play the game. Saw him play in SF.
How's that for an outfield, Mays, Clemente, and Aaron.
I was lucky enough to be at Shea stadium in 1972 when Willie played his first game as a Met. The best part of that day was when Willie hit his first Homer as a Met.
lmao lip reading willie at 4:03, the announcer just said "He won 11 gold gloves" and Willie clearly says "I won more than that!!" lol. He won 12
Simply the best
My brother showed me a baseball card of him in 1966; I have been a Giant fan ever since!
# 24 should be retired by the MLB.

For one of the largest organizations in the US, for perhaps one if that organizations greatest members, this is a pretty weak representation and memorial of a great man, really only the milestones (and are these shown really his best moments?)…no mention of his play prior to MLB, his dedication to his country via time spent in Korea, his contributions and work with local charities, or how his greatness tricked down to his nephew. You could have done better, that's all I am saying. If you are going to take the time to do something, then take the time… The people here in the comments can come up with so many more great things about him than this video shows.
Rest in Peace Willie Mays. 🙏🛐❤️
rest in peace to one of the absolute LEGENDS of the sport.
The GOAT.
Man i cried because i saw him play in the 70,s 1973 world series Mets lost but it doesn't matter because i saw him play.
He even throw a souvenir ball to a police officer. Say Hey.
I only saw the last few years of Willie's amazing career – but even at the end his skills and dynamism remained. None better.
Willie was one of best in the same breath as mantle maris ruth, aaron u name them he was just a class act.
He was a gift from God to America.
A true American icon. Willie Mays was one of the best to ever play the game. Much love to all of his family, friends, and fans. ❤
What a classy man. Watched the tail end of his career when I was a kid. Even in his 40´s you could tell his athleticism was otherworldly. The way he walked and ran… glided around the bases. May he rest in peace.
One of the greats no doubt
❤
How about a football legend?
Not sure if Willie recognized MLB anymore. The clock, phantom base runners and gambling affiliations.
Willie Mays was not only one of the best MLB players ever, HE WAS THE BEST ALL-AROUND PLAYER EVER!!! I'm 75 years-old, and seen many Major League Baseball players in my time. None are or were as good as Willie Mays. If anyone was close, Willie beat them out because of his charisma. As one of Willie's teammates stated when he was in the dugout watching Willie Mays hit a deep drive to the outfield, "The only man who could catch that ball, just hit it!"
Willie 660 homers,no steroids!! Great player
May you rest in peace Willie, and God bless your family members. Please accept my condolences.
I'm 64 year old but I still remember in 1969 sitting around listening to my father and his friends talk about Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, and Jackie Robinson. The "Say Hey" kid they called him and I actually saw him play in 1970 against my hometown Phillies. I wish I could stand here and brag about those times but all I remembered was wanting a Phillies baseball bat with Willie Montanez's name on it and not caring who Willie Mays was…if only I could go back in time.
I will start a “retire number 24 from baseball forever” movement here and now
Leyend
TWillie Mays' catch of Vic Wertz fly to deep center remains one of the great moments of baseball history.
I was hoping that Willie Mays would be here today to see the tribute to the Negro leagues. He was my favorite player growing up in the 60's and 70's. Rest In Peace Willie!
