Remembering D-Day And The Battle Of Normandy | Good Morning Britain

Anniversary of Operation Overlord, or D-Day, marking the 1944 Normandy landings in France when Allied forces began liberating mainland Europe from Nazi Germany in World War II. Approx 156,000 British, U.S. and Canadian forces landed on five beaches along a 50-mile stretch of the heavily fortified Normandy coast. It was one of the largest amphibious military assaults in history. Prior to D-Day, the Allies conducted a large-scale deception campaign that aimed to mislead the enemy about the intended invasion target. By August 1944 all of northern France had been freed.
