Without spoiling anything, the source material is framed as a written work dedicated to the legacy of House Targaryen with an unreliable narrator telling the story by compiling sources from other unreliable narrators. So, in my opinion, it's a more split in the middle with both factions coming out as the villains with the small folk ultimately becoming the true victims.

Everyone sucks in the books – and the way it is written is like a historical text. So thereās no true point of view mix ups – like in ASOIAF. Itās strictly a retailing if history from differing interviews done by a Grand Maester at least a few decades after the Dance of Dragons has ended.
Itās written by men who do not respect women – do both Alicent Rhaenyra come across badly because men who tell the stories donāt like that women were involved at all
The show get a lot of leeway for that reason as well – there are a lot of mysteries and just dropped plots in the book because no one could recall the exact way something happened.
People likes to romanticize GOT first three season as some of the best because of the characters, their motives, and how they said things – and it is fantastic. Itās so good because all the dialogue is just straight ripped text from the novels.
When the show started entering territory that GRRM had not touched on yet and actually ran off of page to screen adaptation material is when the show fell off.

In the books both sides do awful things and I think the show has and will continue to show that, but the inescapable fact is Rhaenyra is the true heir. Donāt let anyone tell you about bastards stripping her of it Or Westeros tradition. The Targaryens set their own rules and have dragons. Simple as. Moreover, the King makes law and he named his daughter heir.
They're setting up the guy with the sick daughter becoming a dragonrider for Vermithor or the other big dragon. Honestly, why not? the commoners are suffering and this is a chance to raise up some of the commoners and gain new perspectives. Team Green has made sure to hoist themselves up as orderly, traditional, and pure but Team Black has the advantage in non-traditional rule, especially with Rhaenyra at the head. It's a risk seeing as some people look down upon Team Black because Jace is the result of an extramarital affair but it matters less the "purity" of the blood than what you can do despite it. Baela can ride a dragon. So can Aegon, Aemond, Luke, and Helaena.
Alicent is getting a taste of what Rhaenyra is going through is funny, getting sidelined because she's a woman, now Alicent knows how it feels.

In the books both sides are terrible. Rhaenyra killed laenor. Ordered Daemon to kill vaemond and fed his corpse to her dragon, among other things. The show also cut out the most likeable green character from season 1 and season 2 now. Itās more like GOT in the books.

To answer your question about the books yes, youāre on the right track.
Both parties are really crappy people to favor. Yes the Greens are MUCH worse in the book than they are in the show. (Can you imagine š±)However so are the Blacks, to the point where you just pray that someone ends the madness.
I will say this, the show props up the Blacks as Protagonists and the Greens as antagonists because most people see in black and white and donāt have the patience to see the shades of grey.
Rhaenyra in the books is very different from how she is portrayed in the show, Iām pretty sure youād all hate her.
Blacks, Greens both are wings of the same Dragon that kills the realm.
The show is absolutely biased towards Rhaenyera. In the book she gets fat while peasants starve, she is extremely hated by the people, and actually killed her ex husband (which is why seasmoke was able to bond to another person). She's just genuinely awful. Meanwhile, Aemond is way less mustache-twirling villain as it was the Baratheon daughter who pushed him to kill Rhaenyera's son.

Respect?? Dragons respect their Dragon riders. Vhagar respects Aemond. Vhagar lost control because Luke lost control of his dragon. If weāre going by that logic then Lukeās dragon doesnāt respect him. Danaerys and her dragons we see I believe twice that Drogon tries to snap at Danaerys, and her dragons when they fight ignore her. So you could say they donāt respect her. What Iām trying to say is Dragons are not pets. They are friends they are their own persons in a way – Viserys says this in season 1, āThe idea that we control dragons is an illusion.ā
