What is the Reform Party platform entering the 2000 election? Everything. Name a political issue you feel strongly about, and odds are, it’s both strongly for it and strongly against it. Bear witness as the weirdest collection of wingnuts, cranks, careerists and scumbags ever assembled in American politics presides over the righteous and necessary implosion of what inevitably became the pointless anti-movement we call the Reform Party.

  1. Wow, the fact that Pennsylvania didn’t even have a percentage point on it at all for Pat Buchanan on the Associated Press’s polling chart @ 55:40 is very hilarious and makes me pretty happy and proud to be from that state.

  2. "The Flu would poll better than this"
"Just two ships sinking in the night."

Jon has to know that he says these things, right? He can't be unaware of how well these phrases work, right?

  3. I very much disagree with your conclusion. The Reform Party is not evidence that 3rd parties are good. They did nothing, accomplished nothing, helped elect a warmonger, and were taken over by white nationalists.

I'm not a big fan of a two party system, but if anything the tragedy of the Reform Party is the best endorsement of it.

  4. The utter lack of mention of poor James Stockdale, Perot’s VP candidate in 1992, perplexes me because if anything, that was a pretty important sign that Perot was all wax and no wick and made what came after that inevitable. I remember watching the VP debate in 1992 (or rather my dad watching it, I was a kid) and Stockdale could best be described as “befuddled” and clearly recall him wondering what he was he doing there while Gore and Quayle squabbled. Perot being who he was made his questionable decisions inevitable; that the party lasted long enough for Buchanan to torpedo it was miraculous.
