Edit: as for the bombers. I think it's bcs they were using proton BOMBS not torpedoes. Those things are inaccurate and not guided, but they do loads of damage and can hit multiple hardpoints, so they're best used to hit the Hull hitpoint on a ship instead of a singular hardpoint
