Last year, Utah’s Great Salt Lake reached its lowest level ever recorded, but massive snow amounts this summer have brought it back from the brink. Now, there are new signs of life at the lake. John Blackstone has more.

Looks like water's back on the menu, boys
Appreciate this update and the scientists seizing the moments of study for future generations to care for the environment
Caused by Climate Change. 😅
I have no doubt cbs blaimed the drought on climate change
"We will be in drought within the next five years." Probably next year. This was an El Nino year, which typically brings increased precipitation to the west.
0:57 — hill in the background with several ancient, Pleistocene beaches from when the Great Salt Lake was far higher and larger than today.
yeah if that keeps happening because of climate instability they'll have more than a lake to deal with
Everyone who has commented so far clearly watched the piece and understood it. How is it that the hosts of the show didn't seem to get it? Jeff Glor even misquoted Bonnie Baxter saying that she said, according to his distortion, "I wrote the obituary for this lake. Now I'm saying it's back." She absolutely did NOT say that. The lake has recovered 5 feet of a needed 11 feet of depth, and the likelihood of that continuing in the next few years is extremely low. What ever happened to intellectual honesty in journalism? After a well done report, this host just blatantly tries to undermine the point being made. This is good news for the moment, but the overall situation remains grim. Shame on you CBS. You are a complete disappointment to honest journalism.
Maybe humans don't have enough data to predict mother nature. Don't try to be smarter than mother nature.
she is soooo sweet. We need smart people now more than ever and the Republicans are busy trying to undermine education
Beautiful lake
Just more proof it's all about the earth healing itself and not climate change or global warming. It's all about the SUN and EARTH only.
Wonderful news. But its gonna take way more than a historical amount of snow to solve the GSL. We need more than just one year of heavy snow.
Snow is good!
It’s only a matter of time before it’s gone
Born and raised in SLC. This year bought us a couple years. That's it. We have had over 20 years of data showing this was happening but they did nothing. It's pathetic. We had a governor that told the citizens to "pray for rain" Instead of creating changes
Funny how Mother Nature does that… only fools believe in climate change
This is a farce. John Blackstone is a fool or a tool of agricultural interests. The main threat to the Great Salt lake is the water being taken out by farmers growing alfalfa. There is no political will to stop this, and this article shows this too well. Same thing is happening at Mono lake in California and Walker lake in Nevada. We have cowards for jounalists these days, it seems.
IMPEACH JOE BIDEN.
now they can wash cars and water lawns until the next drought
El Nino winter flood/snow incoming in 4 months.
@ Ferry, Your Faith has made thee Whole. Prayer is your Remedy! Keep the Faith n continue to remain steadfast n fasting n prayer unto our Lord for Rain for the land God gave yur family to steward over.🙏 😇
Can’t wait for it to fall even lower next year! Permanent problems require permanent solutions…
We have the water to refill each year, currently it is been redirected to all the farms.
those are excellent news, especially in such dark times. still work needs to be done
Hooray for Snow ❄️ ❄️ ❄️!!!!!!!!
Jesus, the morning show commentators are clueless.
We live in a time of weather misinformation. Last week there were news reports that this was the hottest summer in 120,000 years and some said the hottest summer ever. All the weather websites list different forecasted highs and lows and precipitation and humidity. The weather maps on nightly news are more likely to show heat indexes than actual temperatures. If someone installs a temperature probe above an air conditioner or black asphalt parking lot, it will read higher in the summer.
In a couple decades are we going to say, “the 2020’s was a hot decade,” or, “that was the beginning of the end?”
I have a feeling that a mild several years is all that it will take and climate scientists will be patting themselves on the back for saving the Earth from assured destruction and mass extinction by ramming a green initiative down all our throats as China and India could care less about targets set by rich people about rich people problems.
Yup, conserve water 💦
Never happy no matter what. That's the Left.
Nothings going to change if nobody changes BAU. Temporary reprieve at best.
So you're telling me mother nature found away 🤔 😆 🤣 😂 😹
i tend to think all this water came from that volcano off the coast of california that that wuz it for water to give az it put so much water ash in to the atmosphere
I dont get why we have water for golf courses, but we are cutting water for farmers.
Good fior Salt Lake City great for the fauna and flora.
Beautiful Ive been to See this Area So Happy Its still thriving 🌾
Already fighting over water rights in Utah. I highly doubt anyone will build the infrastructure and fill the lake with water. Too much building
That was great wien the thunder spoke up!😂
This is fantastic to see! Water in a salt lake…😊
Great update from the scientists who study this.
And within 5 years it'll be flash floods, And here come the; Climate is locked into these parameters, what's happening?
Obviously, im not very scientific, but can someone tell me, how does fresh water become a salt lake? Is it the minerals in the ground?
You're NOT going to tell us what's in the dust, are you? You're also NEVER going to discuss chem-trails.
We had a good idea that the lake could be in trouble in the 1990's. Our republicant politicians refused to act until they found out that there would be toxic dust heading toward majority white communities. Keeping it 💯
THAT'S RIGHT! GOD opened His Heavens by HIS merciful hand, because of His goodness, kindness, and faithfulness! So-called Mother Nature is just a fairytale. People who use that term simply don't want to give God any Glory, even when He is doing wonderful things for our benefit alone. Thank You, Heavenly Father!
Don't prophesy more drought, for goodness sakes! Don't you know words are powerful? The Bible says the power of life and is in the tongue! Why would you speak disaster over the area where you live?
