Real 737 Pilot plays X-Plane 12 LIVE! | Early Access Preview

The long anticipated released of X-Plane 12 has landed and is now available in Early Access.

Today we’re going to try the simulator in its vanilla state flying from the Isle of Man in the Default Cessna 172 to Belfast Intl to see what changes have been made.

To finish off we’re then going to fly a short sector in ZIBO’s XP12 Early Access Version of his Boeing 737-800 NG from Belfast Intl to Bristol. All sectors will be flown live weather and live time.

What do you think of X-Plane 12? Let me know in the comments section below!

THIS STREAM IS NOT TO BE USED FOR REAL WORLD FLIGHT TRAINING

The primary purpose of this stream is to give you the opportunity to see how a Real 737 Captain operates a desktop simulated aircraft in real time using real world operating procedures.

Whilst every effort is made to accurately replicate the way the aircraft is flown based on my experience as an Airline Captain and Type Rating Instructor, this is purely for entertainment only.

If you happen to be a line pilot or training pilot you must not follow the guidance in this livestream, it is purely for non-professional computer simulated flight. Only consult your approved material from your respective operator.

Personal questions and queries regarding my employment status will not be answered.

  1. So then! I had great fun previewing X-Plane 12 for the first time during my inaugural stream and despite some people in chat voicing very one-sided opinions (I’m also a huge fan of MSFS by the way!) I believe XP12 in this early access from is a great foundation for the future of X-Plane.

Firstly, the graphics and visual quality. Clearly an improvement on XP11 but still requiring work. I find that everything is a little blurry at a distance (cockpit textures/clouds) and the flight deck was far too dark. Reflections were good and live weather has improved although the simulation of variable winds close to the ground hasn’t, no doubt these will be addressed as XP12 progresses through the early access period. The Ground textures, we knew they wouldn’t improve as stated by Laminar. MSFS looks stunning compared to XP12 in almost every department but one thing that took me by surprise was the quality of the default airports along with the airport lighting in XP12. Having visited 3 default airports during today’s stream I personally thought the airports in XP12 were not only better in appearance but also the representation of the actual airport compared to the default equivalent in MSFS.

Both MSFS and XP utilise sophisticated technology and tools to simulate flight and having spent 5500 hours sat in aeroplanes for the last 16 years, XP for me, IMO, still feels the best regardless of how flight is being simulated. I’m not saying MSFS is bad, far from it, it’s very good. It just feels better in XP and I saw that today when playing around with the sim (the ground handling has improved significantly) and once devs tweak their aircraft for XP12 that trend will continue.

Regardless of my opinion there is only one thing that matters and that is you enjoy whatever sim you want to fly and for the vast majority users that will be MSFS. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. I would recommend the PMDG 737 in MSFS for the best overall simulator experience. The flight modelling is good, and you get that beautiful scenery as well.

On a side note, I read most comments on YouTube and all the opinions from all the different people who watch my content but please keep your comments and opinions respectable (from both flight sim camps). XP and MSFS are both brilliant sims in their own way and always a little disappointing to see disrespectful comments from people who feel the need to get their point across as to why their favourite sim is better. This very small minority (from all flight sim camps) always argue like children over which sim is best. It really is quite baffling if I’m honest and thankfully myself and the silent majority are mature enough not to engage in that kind of behaviour.

Is XP12 ready right now? Having played around with it today, I’d say no, it isn’t, it’s in early access and if you’ve got XP11 with all your plugins and addons I’d wait until your favourite plugins and addons are completely compatible before considering switching. The same applied when MSFS was released, there was a whole host of problems, issues, and bugs. Laminar will need to address their issues too.

Anyway, I hope you found my opinion interesting and regardless of what aircraft and simulator you fly, thank you for taking the time to watch my content and joining me in the virtual skies. I look forward to joining you in MSFS and XP11 in the future.

  2. The clouds need way more work by LR. The clouds are simply too blurry and have very little definition. Also, there are very weird cloud shapes sometimes. As for autogen, I know that Austin insists he won’t go down the satellite/photogrammetry route, but to make up for that, XP 12 should have had more regionalized autogen. A streamer was flying in Cairo in XP 12, but that streamer noted he could have also been flying in Phoenix, Arizona, the autogen looked the same. Overall, XP 12 is more like XP 11.5.

  3. Nice preview Captain – as usual. Keep on going. Comparisons between each sims should be objective. And that is what we really appreciate being around you. I hope seeing you live in XP11/12 & MFS. Cheers.

  4. @flightdeck2sim Thank you for another awesome stream. Took XP12 for a spin last night doing circuits at EGTE in all the GA default aircraft. The flight model is excellent, weather much improved. Yes there are bugs and graphical hiccups but this is a Beta and that's what public betas are for, to squash them. Whenever a new sim is released in Beta it's the first exposure of the code to the myriad of hardware configurations that we use. Whining on youtube comments sections won't help LR squash the bugs. For those who are using XP12 ar this stage please don't install any addons (or keep 2 copies of the sim, one with addons one without) and test it in a vanilla state, use the bug reporting form on the Xplane website and then once the beta phase has ended LR will have the info to make sure the full release is as good as can be! Most importantly remember what binds all us flight simmers…..the sheer joy of flying and the enjoyment of it in whichever sim takes your fancy. Safe skies to all!

  5. I don't really play or use flight simulators. I don't have the computer that can handle them, and besides, I prefer watching flight simmers, so I don't really have an opinion on XP12, informed or otherwise. But this is why I watch you and others, because you know what you're talking about when it comes to sims like XP12, XP11 and MSFS.

  6. This is Xplane 11 Re-vamped a little.. Don't be fooled they haven't built a new sim.. and graphics arnt going to be that much better than what you see in this video. cause the are still using Xplane 11 software… such a shame.. And alot of people are going to fall for it aswell.

  7. 15:12 the ammeter being around 0 is not an issue. If you did not draw a lot of current until you started the engine, the battery did not discharge therefore when you turned on the alternator upon engine start, the alternator did not have to charge the battery hence the ammeter not showing any charge.
It reflects what s happening to the battery, not what s happening in the alternator.
The plane looks again quite touchy during taxi. The 172 does not behave this way during taxi and roll out. Looks like LR have not improved that aspect yet. Hope they will in a near update.

I like XP12 so far but considering they re asking 60 bucks for it, it is disappointing. The only reason I d move from 11 to 13 is for the weather to eventually properly fly realistic IMC.
    Happy flights Captain!

  8. The only things that noticeably better in X-Plane flight model wise is sweptback-wing aircraft and ground friction. The MSFS flight model is optimized for straight wing planes in the subsonic range so in a Cessna you get very good flight dynamics but less so in an airliner especially at high altitude. However I think it's just a matter of time before Asobo enhances this area as well. Overall, I think anybody who says both sims are heading different directions doesn't have all the information.

  9. Very nice to see an un-biased opinion. I bought the full version as soon as it was released, I mean, why not? I still have XP-11 with the add-ons if I want to fly that but I'd sooner experiment with the new version and get to know that. I bought the Maule M7 as it was the 1st actual XP-12 designed aircraft and am very impressed with the handling.
I can't compare to MSFS because I don't have it and have no plans to get it. I don't fly heavy Iron as I have no real interest in it but I was very impressed with your crosswind handling!
Each to their own, I guess but I am ver happy with it.

  10. I think it look amazing, and I can't wait until payday, look so much forward to try my all silver P-51D, I really hope that it will work in XP12…..!!! ;- )

Only gripe I have is that the clouds, and particularly the distant coluds, really should be sharper, clouds are usually fluffy to some degree, but at distance they appear sharp….
-Ground textures also need some work, particularly the airport's grass, it look like very quick work, completely flat green would be better, given that it won't have the pattern that it used to have (< edit, Dublin did look quite good though…).

Somebody said "10$ upgrade", thát's ridiculous, for the 60$ that You pay here, You'll be getting three or four years of free upgrades, some of them absolutely major, for instance, we had Vulkan/Metal for free in XP11….
-I'll say thát thát upgrade should have been made XP12, thát was a major work implementing, however Austin had stated that Vulkan/Metal would be a part of XP11, and he stayed with thát, not many in the business of coding would have done thát….!!!

Only thing X-plane need is an easy to use world editor, where You easily can change the types of houses to what You know is real in Your local area, and colour of facades/roofs/window frames etc, and then an easy to use scenery editor as well, where the ground textures can be set properly.
-Then everybody will be sitting editing their local area, and the world in between the edited areas can then be interpolated, thát way we will have a quite perfect plausible world very quickly….

  11. Thanks for the video. I don't understand why Ortho4XP would be any different…? It's just image files, and X-Plane gets pointed to them in the config file. It's not like XPlane has "special orthography code" or anything, as far as I know. I could be mistaken…

  12. Not sure if someone has mentioned this already, but for those in the UK, Argos is currently selling the Thrustmaster TCA Yoke Pack (Boeing Edition) which includes both the yoke and throttle quadrant for £329.99 (£100.00 off). Wasn't available for delivery, but seemed to have plenty of stock in my local shops.

  13. I have 2600 hours in XP 11 (Flight Factor, Toliss etc.) and I hate to say this. I know that Laminar is not so much into graphics, but I think it will become a huge problem for them: the ground textures. No one can tell me that in the year 2022, in the times of high speed internet, they cannot negotiate a contract with a map company. There MUST be a solution for that. If they come up with this default scenery in XP 13, they are done for. This default scenery looks like 2009.
Apart from that, I love the new weather (needs some works, but they will get there) and the trees. Framerate is surprisingly good. Physics are great as in XP 11.
But MSFS is becoming better every month. Laminar needs a game changer.

  14. Please let Laminar know about the way wind-changes happen, only complaint I would have is that the dashboard are very soft, and the aircraft's exterior as well, not when zoomed in, but at normal viewing distance, but thát may be on Zibo….?
-Clouds and ground textures also need some work, but all in all, far better than XP11, which I have had a LOT of fun with, for almost no money, so I don't quite get the haters….

  15. As a fully invested MSFS hobbyist I am very impressed. Runway lighting, water/wiper effects and the replay tool absolutely destroy MS and they need to up their game on some fundamentals instead of world updates and obscure vintage a/c. Will I swap to XP? No because I have invested too much money in MSFS now to re-buy all the a/c and I also do believe MS will improve. But – they need to step the game up – if I had spent zero and was comparing the two it would no longer be an easy decision towards MS.

    Wake up Jorg!

  16. I love the 'view out of the widow' aspect of FS2020, especially in areas with high detail scenery, but far prefer being in the cockpit of X Plane. I'm a bit overdrawn so have only the XP12 demo, at the moment. I'm currently replicating your 'out of Douglas' flight in XP 11, using only free addons / plugins etc. Personally (and this applies to FS2020, too) I can't see the benefit of 3D clouds. They look a tad 'bling nuclear' to me.

    PS Chillblast here, too.
