This new upload is something unusual but nonetheless interesting. The selection concerns a performance of the very familiar Symphony No. 5 by Ludwig van Beethoven … as if it were a sporting event complete with a cheering audience, a referee and two commentators (Robert Dennis and Peter Schickele, the man behind the whole thing). Though the whole thing is outrageously funny, the joke only helps highlight the sheer power of Beethoven’s masterwork and, at the same time, makes one think of the extreme value we attach to music. Hi Travis and Suzi! Last month, the great classical music parodist, Peter Schickele, passed away at age 88. He was best know for his “discoveries” of music by the fictional composer P.D.Q. Bach. He also wrote a lot of outstanding serious music. However, my favorite schtick of his was him presenting a Beethoven symphony as a radio sportscast. The result is… interesting. Er war vor allem für seine „Entdeckungen“ der Musik des fiktiven Komponisten P.D.Q. bekannt. Bach. Er schrieb auch viele herausragende ernste Musik. Mein Lieblingsstück von ihm war jedoch die Präsentation einer Beethoven-Symphonie als Sportsendung im Radio. Das Ergebnis ist… interessant. Il était surtout connu pour ses « découvertes » de la musique du compositeur fictif P.D.Q. Bach. Il a également écrit de nombreuses musiques sérieuses exceptionnelles.
