“Holy Wars… The Punishment Due” is a song by the American thrash metal band Megadeth. It was released as the opening track and lead single from their fourth studio album, “Rust in Peace,” which came out in 1990. The song was written by Megadeth’s lead vocalist and guitarist Dave Mustaine.
“Holy Wars… The Punishment Due” is known for its complex structure, intricate guitar work, and thought-provoking lyrics. The song is divided into two parts: “Holy Wars” and “The Punishment Due.” The first part, “Holy Wars,” deals with religious conflict, while the second part, “The Punishment Due,” explores themes of justice and retribution.
The song has become one of Megadeth’s signature tracks and is often regarded as one of the greatest thrash metal songs of all time. It showcases the technical prowess of the band’s musicians and has been praised for its intense and dynamic musical composition.
I hope you all like this one. The first Megadeth video on the channel. I really didn’t know what song to react to first but I ended up choosing this one. I have no idea who this band are and I’m looking forward to hearing more from them. Here’s my reaction to hearing Megadeth – Holy Wars… The Punishment Due for the first time.
Thank you for watching my video, I really do hope you enjoyed it Please consider smashing that subscribe button!

Megadeth is Dave Mustaine, lead singer, rhythm and lead guitarist. Over the last 40 years, all of the other band positions have had multiple musicians fill them. If you like this song, let me suggest ‘Good Mourning/Black Friday’. Recorded 4 years earlier, ‘Good Mourning…’ has a rawer feel. There is a different drummer and second guitarist as well. The song begins slowly with a more melodic sound. It then kicks into 2nd gear and never slows until the end.
The drummer you watched is the current Megadeth drummer, Dirk Verbeuren. On this song the drummer was Nick Menza, rip. In the song I have suggested, the drummer is another great, Gar Samuelson, rip.
The first four Megadeth albums are all classic Thrash Metal. After this album, Megadeth albums became more radio friendly with a mix of heavier and light metal.
You need a shower!😆 IMO, this album and Metallica's Master of Puppets are tied for best thrash metal albums!🤘🔥
Hell yeah dude! Welcome to thrash metal.
Tornado of Souls will make you lose your mind.
This is the proper reaction to hearing this! Lol

Not only are they still around, but they're still putting out killer tracks. Check out "We'll Be Back" from their most recent album "The Sick, The Dying…and The Dead".
Welcome to the wicked world of Megadeth… one of the big 4 of 80's thrash metal, next to Metallica, Slayer, and Anthrax 🤘🤘
Dave Mustaine (vocals & guitar) is the main songwriter + band leader… Megadeth has been his musical vision since 1984; this version of Megadeth from 1990 on their 4th album 'Rust in Peace' is their best-known line-up w/ David Ellefson (bass), Marty Friedman (guitar) and (the late) Nick Menza (drums) … Megadeth still frequently changes members til today w/ Dave Mustaine being the mainman.
Dave Mustaine grew up under difficult circumstances and became a guitarist in the L.A. scene as a teen… He joined Metallica in 1982 as their first lead guitarist and helped the band write songs and develop a frenetic sound that became known as thrash metal… Unfortunately, he was also 'Dangerous' Dave because of his drug habits and violent reactions to alcohol… On the eve of recording their first album "Kill 'em all" in NYC in 1983, Metallica fired Dave Mustaine and sent him back to L.A. (Lead guitarist Kirk Hammett came in from San Francisco and replaced him in Metallica)
Dave Mustaine vowed revenge against Metallica and formed Megadeth as a rival band in late '83 w/ David Ellefson (bass) and started doing shows in 1984 w/ Gar Samuelson (drums) and Chris Poland (guitar) joining soon after… Megadeth was signed quickly and released their debut album "Killing is my business…" in 1985 and were touring the US… It quickly became a volatile situation of drugs, alcohol and infighting.
Megadeth signed to a major label and released their 2nd album 'Peace sells, but who's buyin'?" in 1986… it became a gold-selling record in the US, but Metallica was doing much better by that year… and Mustaine remained frustrated.
Samuelson and Poland were fired in 1987 due to excessive drug abuse and pawning the band's gear for drug money… Chuck Behler (drums) and Jeff Young (guitar) joined Megadeth for the 1988 album 'So far so good so what!' … and despite their early success, drugs were wearing out Dave Mustaine and the band… Both Behler and Young were fired by 1989 and replaced by Nick Menza (drums) and Marty Friedman (guitar)
'Rust in Peace' became Megadeth's first platinum record in 1990, but Dave Mustaine was still financially flatlined because of his drug habit… The band's fortunes grew w/ their 1992 album 'Countdown to extinction' which charted at #2 in the US and sold 2x platinum… but Metallica's 1991 album did much better charting at #1… Megadeth went for a more commercial sound, hoping to sell more records w/ the albums 'Youthanasia' (1994) and 'Cryptic writings' (1997)… but could not outsell Metallica. However, Dave Mustaine was able to make peace w/ his former bandmates by 1993.
Nick Menza was replaced in 1998 by Jimmy DeGrasso (drums) for the 'Risk' album in 1999, but the album's commercial sound made it a poor seller… Marty Friedman was replaced in 2000 by Al Pitrelli (guitar) but the 2001 album 'The world needs a hero' did not sell up to expectations… After suffering a nerve injury, Dave Mustaine opted to disband Megadeth in 2002.
In 2004, Dave Mustaine was a married father of 2 and wanted to prioritize… he returned to music w/ a new Megadeth album 'The system has failed' and went on tour w/ new members, also bringing back their thrash metal sound… He built back Megadeth's career w/ stellar albums like 'United Abominations' (2007)… 'Endgame' (2009) and 'Thirteen' (2011)… He finally won a Grammy Award for the 2016 Megadeth album 'Dystopia'… After successfully battling cancer, he returned in 2022 w/ the album 'The sick the dying and the dead'… and Megadeth is back on tour w/ new members yet again.
Great Reaction! The singer Dave Mustaine was the original lead guitarist of Metallica. He's an excellent lyricist and guitarist, and as a vocalist, some like him, and some don't – I think it depends on the song. Most songs on the album_Rust In Peace_are good, with the exception of "Sweating Bullets".
I'm a 52 year old metalhead who grew up on these guys, still my favorite metal band. Love the reaction, man. Keep it up! I'd recommend, from the same album as Holy Wars, Tornado of Souls, Five Magicks, and Lucretia. From one of their earlier albums (Peace Sells…But Who's Buying), i'd say check out Wake Up Dead, Peace Sells, Good Mourning/Black Friday, and My Last Words. Great stuff!
Next up should be "Tornado Of Souls" – from the same album – "Rust In Peace", which is widely considered to be one of the greatest metal albums of all time.
The MOST ORGANIZED ASSAULT ON YOUR EARHHOLES EVER. Welcome to thrash, welcome to top tier metal, welcome to Megadeth. What Metallica aspired to be but became to pretentious to ever achieve.
I said it, fuck off if you don't like it. 🤣 (To the professionals in the comment section).
This song still keeps me hangin on hy the skin of my teeth. Never gets old. They were amazing live performers also. I was blessed to see them in Dallas TX, at Bronco Bowl. "Yes that's a bowling alley". It remains my favorite concert to this day. I was within spitting distance of Dave most of most of the time. Crowd surfing or in the mosh pit the rest of the time. I left bruised and bleeding from a split eyebrow, 4 pounds lighter and in a state of Zen. Metal is healing brother and Metalheads therefore tend to be the most kind and openminded you could hope to meet. It seems brutal when you see a big mosh pit break out. It is kind of brutal. No one is trying to hurt anyone. Its the simultaneous release of anger and agression through rough and tumble. Theres nothin but love among Metal fans.
Welcome to the cult bruh!
Check out Peace Sells (but who's buying). Still one of the heaviest songs to this day.
Still Alive, Still Active, Our Boy Dave Mustaine (Singer) has had some throat health problems… But HOLY FUCK this band Slaps!!! Best reaction ever dude…. You INSTANTLY got it! Love it man!! <3
Megadeth has many songs U will Enjoy. Lived your reaction,I can priudlt say I was a teen when this dropped
MEGADETH king of thrash🤘
React to Megadeth in concert live, San Diego 2007 or 8 I believe it's called…….. blood in the water tour. Check out the songs, Sleepwalkers and the song Wake Up Dead
Love your reaction! This is a pinnacle, but their career span is truly an entire mountain range…. There is SO MUCH worthy material by this band.
I wish i could pay you to do a full album reaction to this. Skipping only 1 song lol. its the shortest song on the album and doesnt match the album at all haha. THIS ENTIRE ALBUM IS AMAZING Like what your hearing! Lucretia is pure perfection. This album is RUST IN PEACE , Starts with this song you just heard.. and just gets better and better and better!. SERIOUSLY DO MORE FROM THIS ALBUM! You will not regret it. JUST DONT DO THE SONG Dawn Patrol. It was stuck on the album as a filler, its kinda trash lol
Yeah, back when this album came out, my friend bought it first… brought it to my house… we listened to it. I was beyond blown away. I already loved Megadeth, but this was truly next level for them. Needless to say, I went out and bought the album for myself, the next day. Truly a metal masterpiece.
Welcome to Megadeth, enjoy the ride!! Whatever you listen to from here on out, don't watch the video versions of their songs, just the album versions.
