It’s been 8 years since I ranked the difficulty of each game in the Dark Souls series. Since then, we’ve seen the release of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, Elden Ring, and it’s DLC Shadow of the Erdtree. Today we begin revisting each of these games, this time ranking the Dark Souls Series boss difficulty from my sole perspective. We’ll rank the difficulty of the Demon’s Souls bosses, Dark Souls bosses, Dark Souls 2 bosses, Dark Souls 3 bosses, Bloodborne bosses, Sekiro bosses, Elden Ring bosses.

Today we’ll be ranking the Dark Souls 2 bosses, revisting old favorites such as Nameless King, Slave Knight Gael, Sister Friede, Darkeater Midir, Soul of Cinder, Pontiff Sulyvahn, Abyss Watchers, Yhorm the Giant, and more.

  1. I'm surprised the Crystal Sages were that high. I mean, yeah, the clones can decimate you but throwing knives can help

As someone who fights them "as intended" I'd rank them one place harder than Iudex

  2. In the base game, I've died much more to Nameless than I have Soul. Soul just felt like a Hunter fight from Bloodborne to me and I had gotten so used to those that Nameless was the first major challenge when I started DS3, followed by Aldrich when I tried to play a mage

  3. I'm not sure how many are aware of this, but Iudex Gundyr's jump slam attack can be parried in the first phase. I was a little bewildered when I saw it, but adding another attack that can be parried really speeds up the fight, I think.

  4. Damn, the end tho… I feel pretty much the same way after replaying the trilogy, now replaying Elden Ring (no PS so no Demon's or Bloodborne, and Sekiro is another beast entirely as much as I love it)

Dark Souls 1 still has top tier atmosphere and makes you feel so small and powerless in a hostile world. It's wonderfully depressing, and while the bosses are now slow and sluggish after playing Elden Ring so much, they still hold up.

Dark Souls 2 has many flaws, MANY, but it's kind of "the whole is more than the sum of its parts", somehow, despite the flaws, it has its charm and the overall experience is enjoyable and memorable, even if only a handful of bosses (Sir Alonne, Fume Knight, Ivory King, Blue Smelty, Sinh, Velstadt, Lost Sinner and Mirror Knight) are actually great and most of the areas are no better than mediocre, but yeah, it's remarkable how despite having not so great ingredients it manages to be a pretty good experience.

Meanwhile Dark Souls 3 has great ingredients (the best gameplay and bosses of the trilogy) but in this case the whole is less than the sum of the parts. It's indeed painfully linear, and you might as well just ignore the areas because the bosses are why you're playing anyways. A shame, I think only Irithyll, Ringed City, Lothric Castle + Grand Archives, Cathedral of the Deep and to a lesser extent Ariandel could compete with the best areas of Dark Souls 1.

Elden Ring is my favorite still, alongside Dark Souls 1.

  5. I dunno man, this feel like I'm watching someone who is guessing at what's the hardest via watching several different videos with several sets of skill… Oceiros, dancer, lord of cinder, all ahead of Nameless king? I agree with the last 3… but what is this list?

  6. I am sorry but this list is worthless. You use a weapon for bosses that you would never be able to do in a normal run. Doing less damage over time makes some bosses much more threatening, whats the point of getting an op weapon early, overpower the easy beginning bosses and then just say "that was easy"? Of course it was, you have a strong weapon. How about using weapons fitting to the progress a player would actually encounter these bosses? Waste of time to watch this video

  7. Really feel a ranking is skewed if you are playing NG+ with ranked up weapons. NG runs are so different due to experience and gear.

I do understand it’s impossible to go back to that first ever experience however

  8. I cannot believe we’ve lost another person to dark souls 2 glazing. Saying this is your least favorite from soft game is incredibly bizarre to me when demon souls and dark souls 2 exist. This reaffirms to me that some opinions are in fact wrong.

  10. So I’m currently halfway through the video (crystal sage) and I have 2 things to note.
    1. The spear of the church fight NEVER goes as easy against a real player regardless of how many resources the host has as long as the boss isn’t stupid. I have videos of me absolutely decimating ganks as the boss and having so many heals stacked.
    2. To make the second phase of crystal sage easier just carry throwing knives. The clones die from literally 1 damage so you’re not wasting time. Git gud newb

  11. Pontiff is definitely experienced best as a melee only fight as two duellists trying to kill each other.

Like the difference in difficulty, stress, pressure and Estus oppurtunities, just like pontiffs quaking knees is STAGGERING.
Pontiff with and without a parry shield really is just such a different experience, and just being decent at parries makes pontiff and gundyr drop down like 10 places in what their real difficulty should be.

I really appreciate this list being made in a much different light than the original series, like the original feels a lot more ranking what their difficulty really is at their base, whereas this one’s coming from a VERY experienced and informed perspective that moreso sheds light on how exploitable a boss is to great players and how consistently they can make a fight succeed.

They’re both very valuable perspectives and have their useful places so it’s really nice to see the difference between how hard a boss is, and how hard a boss can be made to be.

  12. Placing Midir on #1 just tells me you've still not understood the fight imo.
He's way more straight forward than any of the other top picks. Both on my first playthrough and now years later as a veteran, Midir is an incredible and great fun fight, but in no way does he top Friede or even Gael in difficulty.

  14. Midir is one of if not my favorite dragon design, but I don't know if I agree that its the hardest DS3 boss. All of its attacks have a pretty easy window to attack his head, I dont see how that makes him hard

  15. I dont know if you can compare the difficulty of killing the bosses with a +9 weapon…

The earlier and mid bosses are not intended to be faced with a meta character and weapon.

You should have compared them at their intended level

  16. You know what’s crazy? Deacons of the Deep and Curse Rotted Greatwood are still awesome boss fights, so it really puts in perspective how amazing the bosses in this game are. DS3 is forever the Boss GOAT.

  17. I had a hard time with the game when I first played it, and I was using a some kind of straight sword or claymore. I later played the game through after playing ER through with a friend wielding dual Giant Crushers, I decided to just stick with heavy hammers, and steamrolled the game with Vordt's Great Hammer, most deaths against the bosses I had were against Midir, and that was 2, so I won on third time. Nameless King was 2nd try, almost everything else was 1st try and none of it was even close.
